Meet Trailblazer Aki Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aki Davis.

Aki, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, but a resident of Atlanta for over 15 years now, I initially started the #LegDay athleisure brand as a way to keep my wife in fashionable workout gear for her daily gym runs. Coinciding with that time, working on the campus of Clark Atlanta University, I noticed an uptick in the number of people who would wear athletic gear (shorts, leggings, hoodies, etc.) regularly just for the purpose of comfort. It finally dawned on me that the current societal climate is a mix of the health-conscious segment and movers and shakers who dress for functionality while on the go. Where those two groups intersect is where #LegDay fits in. We are gear fit for a day at the gym or a day on the move.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While it hasn’t been a smooth road, I will say the challenges I have encountered have been few. One of the great things about starting a clothing line is it allows for a great deal of creative freedom. It also affords a person the opportunity to create a brand that represents something specific and special to themselves.

On the challenging side of things, the upkeep and maintenance of a website to ensure it is not only user-friendly but grabs the attention of a potential customer is hard work. If I could give some advice to anyone starting their journey down this path, I would say stay true to yourself. It’s easy to fall into the trap of recreating the “it” look of the time. Don’t be afraid to put your own unique design and taste into your work.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about HashtagLegDay – what should we know?
At #LegDay, we are a black-owned and operated business that specializes in athletic gear for men and women. We are known for our novelty tops, which carry statements that range from motivational to celebratory. As a brand, we are most proud of our commitment to the Black experience. With shirts that range from “HBCU Made” to “Culture Is Currency,” we pride ourselves on creating gear that celebrates our culture.
