Conversations with the Inspiring Amanda Gaines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Gaines.

Amanda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2005, I went to college to major in Fashion Design. After getting my degree, I wasn’t sure which direction I was going to take. So, for two years, I made prom dresses for high school students but later realized that it wasn’t for me. The field of fashion can be inclusive, which resulted in a lot of years going by without me focusing on one particular goal. It wasn’t until 2016, I began searching for fashionable handbags and accessories for my then five-year-old niece. During my search, I couldn’t find the items I had in mind for younger fashionable girls. Due to this lack, I decided, hey! Why don’t I start my own handbag and accessory business for younger girls and that’s how Classic Marie was born.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think with any business, there will be bumps along the way. As obstacles occur, I feel it’s the best way to learn and grow for the better.

As a start in my journey, I needed to take handbag classes. I searched all over the Atlanta area and couldn’t find the proper classes I needed. Sadly, I gave up yet again and more time passed me by. One day, I was searching on Instagram and thought about SCAD in Savannah, GA. As I was searching on their page, I began to click on the names of students that were tagged in pictures and I started messaging them to see if they gave classes. I came across a lot of “No, sorry I don’t,” but I eventually got my YES. Most people that know me know I hate driving long distances. But I found a teacher in Savannah, GA who was willing to give me private handbag classes. I prayed for a sign and I wanted to know if this was for me and I got my answer! I told myself it’s now or never! I made a 3-hour commute to Savannah, GA for each class and it was the best decision I ever made for my journey.

My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs just starting their journey, PLEASE stop doubting yourself and just do it or someone else will! One thing we have to learn is, you can’t make it if you don’t try. In order to climb, sometimes you have to fall, but don’t give up! Don’t let time pass you by with “what if’s” it’s now or never. So go be GREAT! And live your wildest dreams.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Classic Marie story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in handbags and accessories for younger ladies from the early 20’s to as young as four years old. To keep from being overwhelmed, I’m starting off with just handbags and will later add accessories.

I’m most proud that I can use my creative abilities to create a product that’s different and give a fresh outlook for young fashion. While most companies focus on setting one tone for their brand, I’m not. Literally lol my designs are all over the place, but for a good reason. I don’t want my brand to be just for “the simple girl” or “the edgy girl”. I want my designs to reach every girl because we have so many different styles. One day, I may want to wear heels and be dressy. The next day, I may want to be comfy and wear sneakers. My focus is to speak to all styles, so you don’t have to be “selective” when shopping with me.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
In general, I feel the biggest barrier in female leadership is that women are held to higher standards than men. I feel women are expected to produce more or “make a name for their self” versus male roles. But regardless of how companies carry their principles, never forget that whatever is for you, it will be so. Never overextend yourself for any business and know your worth. Which will probably lead you to starting your own business anyway lol You got this girl!
