Meet Alexander Ruffin of Diamond Life Health & Wellness in North Decatur and Scottdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Ruffin.

Alexander, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first fell in love with fitness training to play college football. Unfortunately, I was unaware at the time of how NCAA Eligibility works, so by the time I was ready to play. I was turned away because I had run out of eligible years to play. Once letting go of football dreams, I spent time training athletes who didn’t make the football team. Out of the seven athletes I trained, 4 of them made the team, that’s when I knew I had a knack for genuinely helping others through fitness. Afterward, I spent about a year training students on campus. Instead of charging money, I just asked for free access to the schools’ cafeteria whenever it was time to eat. Fast forward a few years, I’m now coaching at Orangetheory Fitness. This is where I learned to master the art of training multiple demographics in one large group, moving up the ladder I eventually became a Regional Trainer and even helped open a new corporate business Redline Athletics. Over time, I decided it was time to take a chance on myself and start a fitness journey under my name. So I walked away from both Orangetheory Fitness and Redline Athletics to start my own business in health and wellness. Within two years of consistent work, I am now training youth athletic teams while also teaching boxing cardio boot camps for adults. I still have a ton of room for growth, so I must keep my foot on the gas.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The number of struggles seemed endless at one point. When you go from making salary to working nonstop to make ends meet, it humbles you to another level. I’ve had my car repossessed and was even evicted from my apartment. But the best part about hitting rock bottom is that now you can only go up. So through the struggles of having slow seasons and personal training being the first thing off the budget for clients when they’re going through financial woes, persistence and faith is how I’ve overcome the many obstacles.

Please tell us about your work.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The number one thing I would’ve done differently is trusting myself sooner and taking the chance.
