Meet Jasmine Powell of The Lavish Lounge Makeup Bar in Columbus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Powell.

Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was like most young girls, fascinated with all things girly and pink. Growing up, my mothers didn’t know how to do my hair in the latest styles and trends. That is when I was begging to do my own hair around the age of 11. What started out as my therapy grew to be what God wanted of me all along. I began doing my friend’s hair, as well as people in my neighborhood. I was a introvert and the idea of communicating with people terrified me, although doing their hair was effortless. In 2010 I went off to college at Jacksonville State and had absolutely no idea what I was doing there. A lot of people in my family didn’t find the beauty industry as a real career, but God had other plans for me. I dropped out in 2011 and moved back home. I joined a local beauty school and worked at a beauty supply store part-time. During my time in beauty school clients loved me, I was being requested left and right. I still couldn’t get the hang of communicating so I would listen to women pour their hearts out to me and I was their diary. I didn’t say much, but when I did my clients found comfort in my words and they would always come back for their next appointment. I used to often question what my purpose was in life and one day my Pastor said “Your Purpose in life is to serve God and do what he has called you to do, whatever you do with ease to help others is your true calling”. That’s when I stepped out on faith and became a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist when I graduated beauty school. After utilizing social media in 2014 for advertising my services, I quickly became booked and busy. I was servicing women from all walks of life, working 12-15 hours a day. They tell me absolutely everything about them, from being quiet and timid to a beautician and counselor. I have worked in night clubs and turned around and worked weddings during the day. I have done it all and it’s been great every step of the way. Following God’s unchanging word has blessed me with my hands and a gift to help women feel great about themselves. I opened my salon The Lavish Lounge Makeup Bar in 2018 in Columbus and there I do hair and makeup, I would have never imagined owning my own salon but it’s possible. I’ve been in business since 2014, I’ve won local awards and even been blessed to touch a few stars. The best is yet to come!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is always going to be some struggles that come your way. You have to keep reinventing yourself to stay ahead of the game constantly. Work hard for those rainy days that will come. You’re not going to be booked and busy all the time, so you have to work hard to keep your business thriving. Stay on top of your marketing and promote, promote, promote! Whether it’s 1 like or 100 likes, promote yourself always. There were times I didn’t have as many clients as I used to, so I would have to reach out to people that I didn’t know and just let them know that I was the stylist for them. Be fearless and step out on faith. Take classes and stay current with your techniques. I often browse Instagram and YouTube for the next big look and practice until I get it right so I can offer them to my clients.

The Lavish Lounge Makeup Bar – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Lavish Lounge Makeup Bar is my heart and soul. I make sure I give my clients looks that I would wear myself. I want my clients to look great and feel great. Whether it’s hair or makeup, I want them flawless and I thrive on having a peaceful sanctuary for them to relax and enjoy their service. We’re spiritual at The Lavish Lounge Makeup Bar. You may come in having a not so great day and it is my mission to have you leave in a better mood. I specialize in Glamour Makeup Applications, they are my personal favorite, but I give my clients whatever look they are most comfortable with because it’s all about them with me. I’m proud of my salon’s growth, I started in my two bedroom apartment to a storefront with my name on it and it’s only getting better with time. God is so wonderful and we praise him all the time at The Lavish Lounge Makeup Bar! I’m well known for my bold looks when it comes to makeup, I was doing glitter eyes when it wasn’t cool and now we’re on to glitter everywhere. It’s amazing to see the evolution of the beauty industry.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is the reoccurring client. I’ve touched so many faces in my career, but I’m blessed to have clients that have been with me for years. The look on my clients faces when I spin them around for the final look is success to me. When I was able to quit my part time job and pursue the beauty industry full time was a major turn around in my career. It’s been a very rewarding journey. There were many long nights and early mornings, it’s been a lot of hard work and dedication has gone into being a Makeup Artist and Hairstylist. Often you have to be placed early in the morning and you may not get back home until late at night. You have to be able to be a chameleon and be understanding of people from many walks of life as God is.
