Today we’d like to introduce you to Meoshua Anderson.
Meoshua, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love for all things creative began as a kid. It was all just so natural to me. I didn’t even realize, let alone think I’d grow up to pursue a career in an art-driven position. I knew I wanted to be an artist of some sort but back then, I was more into having my paintings displayed in a gallery somewhere. I enjoyed any and all mediums, be it painting, drawing, sewing, musical and theater arts. I loved it all; so much, my mom was sure to keep me involved in anything arts related.
I remember back in the day watching “My Super Sweet 16” and being so intrigued by all the details and extravagancy. As I got older, I’d find myself taking the lead when it came to planning a trip with my girlfriends, planning celebrations, whatever. Along the road, I became the “go-to-girl” for all things party or creative. Whatever they thought of, I was the one who could always figure out how to bring it to fruition.
Fast forward to when I became a mother and that’s when I found a deeper joy for children’s parties. My mom always made it a point to celebrate EVERYTHING and made every holiday and birthday extra special for us. I vowed always to do the same for my own kids and every year, I look forward to planning their birthdays.
From seeing the work I’d do for my kids, my friends and family began commissioning me to design things for their kids, baby and bridal showers, milestone birthdays, and so on and so forth. From there, Meoshua Charm Events and Design was born.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with anything worth having, my journey has been far from easy. I struggled for a long while trying to figure out just what I wanted to do with my life career-wise. Being creative in just about every sense of the way, it was a challenge trying to narrow down. I teetered from event planning and design to interior design, to furniture restorations. I was good at it all…and enjoyed it all. I just had no clue what to do with it all. After dibbling and dabbling down different paths, I always ended right back up at event design, and that’s when I realized that was my true passion.
When I decided to pursue a career in event design, I would do parties for close to nothing. Some of which, I even came out of my own pocket…by a lot. Not gonna lie, I had no clue what I was doing. I had the creative part down pat, the business part not so much. I watched countless YouTube videos and webinars, did market research, read articles; whatever I could to learn about things behind the scenes. Let’s just say there was a lot of trial and error.
One of my biggest challenges – which is so taboo and often avoided, was pricing. It scared me. I was afraid I’d charge too much, charge too little; would people pay me for what just came so natural to me? But throughout my journey, I had to realize my worth. Many don’t know the time and creative efforts involved in executing a pretty event, and because of this, many don’t understand the costs associated with executing such an event. There are so many moving parts to a successful party. From the initial client contact where I get a brief sense of their vision to figuring out how to execute it and drafting a mockup, to contacting vendors to ensure a cohesive design, curating decor, designing graphics, building props, not to mention the actual setup and breakdown. These things take so much time, patience, and the ability to be able to remember all the minor details the average person may not generally think of.
For me, I love the rush, the hustle and bustle, the small details and then seeing it all come together at the end. It’s funny, I often get clients who’ve had experience planning a party for themselves or loved ones come to me and say, “Never again.” Those are the ones who appreciate the craft even more. As with many businesses, that is still a challenge I face from time to time, but I’ll never let that stop me from striving to put on some of the best of the best!
Please tell us about your business.
Meoshua Charm Events and Design is me; multifaceted, fun, flirty, girly, spunky, colorful. I do welcome all types of socials events but I specialize in children’s bespoke events and baby and bridal showers. I am a one-woman-show and pride myself on the many hats that I wear. Outside of the businesswoman and designer, I am the carpenter, the graphic artist; I do it all.
Where I am most proud of is my self-taught graphic design and woodworking skills. I design my clients’ invitations and other miscellaneous graphics to ensure they can be found nowhere else. I also build and handcraft many of my props. Almost every element of my designs is completely custom and tailored to fit my client’s vision. I am a huge stickler in not copying my own work to be able to provide my clients with a one-of-a-kind experience.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think one of the most essential qualities you absolutely must possess to be successful in this industry is the ability to listen. When I speak to my clients for the first time, I like to have an organic conversation. I let them have the floor and talk. I like to hear about their past, their family and friends, their likes and dislikes, all of that. Usually, what they don’t know is I’m either jotting down notes or taking mental notes of minute points and small details. To me, an event can tell a story, whether it’s a milestone birthday centered around a favorite character at the moment or a bridal shower implementing a small detail the bride mentioned about her first date with her fiancé. It tells a story. I like to be able to throw in an element my client may not have suggested they want, but just in having a conversation and listening, I know they’d appreciate it.
