So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I have always been bigger than most kids my age. I used to get teased on because of my weight. It wasn’t until I got in my 20’s that I started learning to love myself for who I was and I truly gained my confidence. Finding affordable and trendy plus size clothing was always hard for me considering my sense of fashion. Due to that, I wanted to start my own plus fashion boutique. I remember one day sitting around with my then boyfriend and I told him I wanted to start a plus size boutique. At that moment, I didn’t know where to start or I didn’t have the resources at the time to actually start it. As time passed, I started attending college for business management and I had a teacher that gave me some very useful information pertaining to business. I didn’t really get the motivation I needed until I lost my job & at that moment I knew I couldn’t give anyone else the power to ever make me feel how I felt that day again.
So in January 2019, I had a conversation with my husband and I told him what I wanted to do. The beginning part of February 2019, I started Essence Plus Fashion Beautique. I’ll never forget when I posted my first item for sale, it sold out within an hour. At that moment, I knew I could this. I’ve been in business now over a year and my business is continuing to grow. What got me where I’m at today is dedication and God. I’m so thankful to be in the boutique business and to be well known for selling trendy plus size fashion.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the challenges I faced and still facing is learning how to not be afraid to charge what I feel like my items are worth. Due to the area I live in, people be expecting to purchase items for next to nothing and I always end up selling myself short. I’m slowly learning to get out of that, but I be trying to satisfy everyone.
Fear is also an obstacle that I’m currently learning to jump over. Fear has most likely prevented me from being a major company because I’m afraid of making a huge investment and my items won’t sell.
