Meet Jason McCullough of Jason McCullough & Associates in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason McCullough.

Jason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1999, I actually graduated with a degree in computer science. My goal was to become a Jr Systems Administrator. Basically, an IT Guy. I got a job in the IT department of a large home services company. I had the opportunity there to move into the web development team (circa 2003) to help develop their new web based dispatch system for the home service techs. This was groundbreaking at this particular time. Funny when I think about it.

From there I learned that web development and creating web applications was my passion and that I wanted to do more of this work.

Around 2004 I was laid off due to massive layoffs within the company. They outsourced all of our jobs to another country. I was not bitter. It was just business.

In 2005, I started a freelance business. Since that time, I have successfully built over 160 websites. I have been seriously freelancing since 2005. There have been many ups and downs but I have been able to make a sustainable living over the past decade.

On top of running my freelance business, I am a co-leader for the Freelancers Union here in Atlanta, GA. I help other budding freelancers avoid the mistakes I made when I started out.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running my own freelance business has not been a smooth road. It took some time for me to learn what my strengths are and what my weak points were. I had to become comfortable with being a salesman. Because as a business owner, that is what I was. A salesman. I had to learn how to filter out bad clients and learn to recognize good clients.

Once I learned three things:

1) How to sell effectively.
2) How to conduct business as a solo operator.
3) How to manage my money.

Then things started to get better.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jason McCullough & Associates, LLC – what should we know?
I run a freelance web development business. I focus primarily on the development of content management systems like Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, Expression Engine and others.

On top of front-end development, I am also a digital marketing consultant. I help medium sized businesses get started and understand paid advertising in the digital space.

What sets me apart: I have the heart of a teacher. So I am not just performing the service I am also helping the client understand what is going on and how things work. I also specialize in generating qualified leads in very specific markets. Like Avionics, Medical Device Manufacturing companies, etc…

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
That I am a student of the craft. I am constantly learning and adapting to the industries that I serve. I never rest on my past accomplishments.
