Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Zarate.
Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I feel that every journey is never what you are expecting, sometimes worse and sometimes even better! I am originally from Colombia and was raised there. In 2015, I decided to move to the U.S. to pursue my career in advertising, and it became one of the most inspiring journeys I’ve had and toughest. Living abroad in such a diverse country like the United States has put me in situations that have forced me to grow as a creative and become independent, not just from the good moments but also from the bad. As an immigrant, you sometimes feel that you have to prove yourself more than others, and I have certainly felt that on my journey. But even though it has been challenging, I think it has made me stronger along the way, translating to my work.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. As a creative sometimes we tend to compare ourselves to others, and we can feel stuck, so mentally it can be difficult. Growing up in a different country and adjusting to the culture here has also been trying at times, not having family support and feeling isolated – but there is no place I’d rather be. So along the way, I feel that I have started to become more patient with the roads that life has put me on. I have always believed that anything you do, no matter how big or small, you do it with passion – and a lot of times that has hurt me, but it has also brought out the best in me. For me, doing what you love makes the struggles a lot easier to handle.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an art director at work, however I consider myself more as a creative adventurer in life. I have an enormous passion for design and UX design, and I value myself across the spectrum, always trying to find a creative solution in all aspects. When it comes to clients, I like to listen – I feel that is ESSENTIAL. I want to take them down the right path because no matter how many creative freedoms I may have, it is a road that we are both taking. So I ask questions regarding what they are trying to accomplish, what are their goals, and what are the brands that they get inspiration from. I like to get to know them as people – design is such a powerful tool, and it is even more beautiful when it seems natural and organic.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I would change many things if had to start over. I have always been someone that likes to take every opportunity you get in life and make the best of it, and all of my decisions have shaped who I am for better or worse – and I’m happy with who I am. However, as a creative I have learned along the way (and still learning) to not take things so personal because being criticized can be tough, especially when your work is a reflection of yourself. But I have found amazing mentors along the way that have helped me in the toughest moments. Always look out for those who inspire you.
