Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Elizabeth Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for acting started at a young age, my earliest memory is watching Lion King and being overwhelmed with emotion for the first time, that wasn’t a result of getting a spanking or one of my sisters joking on me, but from the words of characters. As I grew older and advanced to “real people” movies like “The Josephine Baker Story”, “The Client” and other great films, I remember thinking to myself, “I want to be able to make people feel.”
I was a late bloomer to the world of acting. I wasn’t involved in school plays, church plays, and I didn’t even join the drama club in grade school. As the youngest of five girls funds were limited for extracurricular activities, however, my sisters and I would recite lines and act out scenes from movies all of the time.
It wasn’t until 2014 when I was able to give acting class a try. I worked at a talent agency at the time and one of the local acting studios reached out to our agency to give away a scholarship seat for the class. My co-worker encouraged me to take it and I did! My time at Truthful Acting Studios played such a pivotal role in my growth as an actor, it was there that I realized that I could do this.
After finishing my training in 2016, I made the move to Atlanta, Georgia. I was ready to get in the thick of this industry and create and I did just that. After five months in Atlanta I booked a recurring role on BET Networks, “The Quad” as “Trina” and then a co-starring role on OWN Network’s breakout drama series “David Makes Man” as “Sharon”.
In my spare time, I enjoy creating my own content, such as, “The TalkBack”, a web-based series that uses the power of conversation of film and television to inspire, educate, entertainment and encourage the culture and “That One Scene”, an IGTV series that showcases monologues performed by me!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is ALWAYS smooth. There have been times where I allowed fear, depression, low self-esteem trick me into thinking that I wasn’t good enough or that I was wasting my time with acting. We all have those moments and take those sabbaticals, but when something is your calling, you always find your way back to it.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Being an actor is more than having the ability to memorize lines. You have to play God in a sense, creating thoughts, emotions, and actions to transform a character description into a real person. Most importantly, you must be 100% empathetic to your character and be the voice for their story – lifting the words of the page and fighting for them.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Thus far, my proudest moment would have to be working on “David Makes Man”. The way it all transpired was so divine. The show was filmed in my hometown of Orlando, Florida on the Universal Studios lot (a place that I frequented quite a few times as a child), it felt so good to be able to be a part of a show that is so true to Florida. I met some amazing people and it was just a full-circle moment for me. I am so excited to see what the year 2020 has in store for me… being a part of VoyageATL “Inspiring Stories” series is a great start! Thank you!
