Meet Allison Person of AP Hair Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Person.

Allison, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After working as a Salon Professional for five years and having my 1st daughter in 2009, I opened my first Salon, Salon 22 in August 2010 in the suburbs of Memphis. I owned and operated Salon22 for nine years. During this time, I worked alongside my twin sister and other independent contractors in Cordova Tn and took this time to grow my Brand and provide the Memphis and surrounding areas with a standard of service that you couldn’t get your usual salon.

My motto has always been to provide an “Experience” for the client. After several years at Salon22, I decided that it was time for a change. It was time to be more independent. I grew tired of renting and decided that I wanted to purchase my own space and have fresh start. I was blessed to find a location in the heart of Memphis. After some major renovations, I created a space where our clients can be comfortable, nurtured and, of course, receive a great service. I also changed the name of my company to Allison Person Hair Care shortened to AP Hair Care. I felt it was only right to attach my name to my brand. Moving forward, instead of having several independent contractors working in one space, I am hiring stylists and staff to create a culture that is high-end and holds my values and standards and give our clients the experience they are accustomed to and deserve.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I always tell people that when it’s God’s timing, He will always work in your favor and things will fall into place. I’m the poster child for this. Back in 2010, I set out to look for my 1st location in June of 2010 and I was in and operating Salon22 by August 2010. Nine years later, and after solidifying my reputation as a leader in the industry, I sold my 1st salon to the 1st person I offered it to and I was opening up my new location that my husband and me own just a few months later. It’s a real testimony. My struggle has always been work/life balance. I have two daughters, ages 5 & 10, and I always consider them before I take on major projects. I don’t like for my work to pull me away from them for too long. I’ve traveled with celebrity clients and worked with major companies, like L’Oréal but I have also turned down jobs if I felt it would affect my family. My husband is an entrepreneur as well and is so supportive of my career. Without his support, I wouldn’t be able to do half the things I get the opportunity to do.

AP Hair Care – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
AP Hair Care is a high-end company that specializes in healthy hair and healthy hair extensions. I service client’s hair care needs and also educate women on how to take care of their hair as well as how to take care of their children’s hair. I created “AP Courses” and I hold classes for the community. I have an online store where I sell AP Hair Extensions. 100% Human Hair that I’ve used for over seven years and use for most of our extension and wig unit services. I’m most known for my Hair Extensions. I have my own hair extensions technique that I call “The Twenty-Two Technique” I’m also known for my AP Custom Hair Wig Units. Our Wigs units are the perfect option for the professional woman that may not have time to go to the salon weekly but wants an instant flawless look daily. It’s also great for the client that wants more versatility. Being able to decide, weekly, if you want extensions or wear your own natural hair. The best of both worlds. What sets me apart from other Stylists is I’m always aware of my Brand. I feel it’s important to represent your Brand everyday. You will never see me with my hair undone. I feel as a successful hairstylist, that’s crucial. I’ve always stood by this and I can say with confidence that I’ve never had a slow period for the 14 years I’ve been behind the chair. My clients look to me for guidance and they trust me. We are family.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as never working a day in your life. When you do what you love everyday it shouldn’t be considered as work. I’m blessed to be in a field that I love, where I can be creative, I can change people’s lives. Success is also leaving a legacy for my daughters. I hope that they see me and want to follow in my footsteps. Keep the name alive. This is also one of the reasons I changed the name. I want to continue to build something to leave for them and generations after.
