Meet Sho Baraka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sho Baraka.

Sho, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was raised in a house that loved music. My parents always had jazz, r&b, and soul playing. My older brothers loved hip-hop. Their affection for hip-hop and my parents making me read historical novels and prose from black leaders gave me an affinity for words and poetic ideas. As I got older, I began to see hip-hop as a medium to use those things that influenced me growing up.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The main obstacle was trying to figure out how to reconcile the multiple facets of who I was- someone who loved art, God, and hip-hop culture. Trying not to sacrifice any part of me to appeal to a specific audience.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an artist, professor, consultant, and all-around creator. I use different mediums for creative writing and thought pieces, create music, lecture on hip-hop and religion, and consult as a creative director and project manager on different projects. I try to engage in creative ways on any project that brings joy and healing to the world. What sets me apart from other creatives and artists is that I am able to entertain and educate, communicate in the streets and classrooms, and engage people at concerts or in board rooms.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Writing more articles, fiction, screenplays, and shorts; allowing my artistic talents to mature so that I can thrive in multiple creative spaces.
