Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobbie Christmas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Bobbie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my career as a writer of business profiles. Over the years I have since written and edited almost every type of reading material, including newspaper and magazine articles, brochure copy, radio commercials, fiction and nonfiction books, and all sorts of business materials, I left the corporate world in 1992 to form Zebra Communications and concentrate on editing books and writing business materials, which later included web copy. Twenty-five years later, my business is still going strong.
Has it been a smooth road?
During my 25 years in business the economy has gone up and down–sometimes way down. During hard times, fewer books get published, so I saw my book-editing income dip during the years of recession and witnessed many of my publishing companies closing their doors. I had to shift my methods of self-promotion many times as the market changed. Technology kept advancing, too, and I worked hard to keep up with all the changes in the industry while I also scrambled to find new clients. My new skills included writing search-engine-optimized web copy, which kept me busy until the book-publishing industry recovered. Over the quarter of a century I’ve been in business I have maintained my motto of “I’ll write or edit anything for money,” and my flexibility has been successful in constantly bringing in new clients and projects from around the world. I have helped countless hundreds of clients get their books to the market, promote their own companies, and otherwise present themselves to the public through written words.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As book editors, we take fiction and nonfiction books after the second or third draft is completed and ensure that the content remains interesting and consistent throughout while we also repair any technical flaws in grammar, punctuation, and syntax. We’ve been especially successful in helping entrepreneurs produce books that broaden their client base and set them up as experts in their field. On the fiction level, I’m proud that books we have edited have been sold to well-known traditional publishers, and many have won local, regional, and national awards, as well.
We differ from other editing services because we do not rely on interns or other inexperienced editors. I have a small staff of highly qualified editors, plus my expertise in editing dates back four decades. If clients request, I do the work myself, so clients always know they have the best editors in the country. Many other editing services are fly-by-night haphazard part-time businesses that come and go. Zebra Communications, on the other hand, has been a full-time, fully dedicated service with a solid reputation for a quarter of a century.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I have always been pleased that I chose to move to Metro Atlanta in 1992 to launch Zebra Communications. I made that decision before we had the Internet and e-mail, because of the large size of the Metro Atlanta market. As a bonus, the Internet later helped me expand my business to English-speaking clients around the world.
I can’t imagine a better market than Metro Atlanta for a startup business.
