Meet Austin Vos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Vos.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Austin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born and raised in Acworth, Georgia- I grew up playing viola and guitar but burnt out by the time I graduated high school because my focus had shifted to finding a decent paying job. I tried and failed to go to art school due to finances and found myself in a sort of mental black hole, living in my childhood home that at the time was quite literally falling apart around me. It was during this time that I took another look at the guitar sitting in the corner of the room I had barely touched in years. I began to approach music completely differently than I ever did growing up. Once I felt the sweet release of writing music there was no looking back. I began producing my own music over the years and eventually started releasing music with this A. Vos project. I am currently located in East Atlanta.

With this project, I try to express my love for the art form by staying honest, creating music for myself, hoping it translates to others. I have released two songs to date with a third song titled “Sedona” coming out on April 8th. In the meantime, I am putting together a debut EP/album with hopes to release it later this year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think there is this endless struggle of finishing things that mean a lot to you personally. I feel like a piece of me is in everything I write, so when the time comes to package it for others to experience, it can be difficult. When it comes to your own work it’s easy to get lost in the potential or sentimentality of it rather than the actual output people are experiencing. Your average listener doesn’t care who you are, where you’re from, what you’re trying to say. They are just there for a moment to consume a piece of art, whether that message translates is entirely up to how well the artist is able to present their idea.

I always try to challenge myself by not thinking about what people “want” to hear, but what I feel is honest expression. I feel like a lot of pandering happens in the music world, and I don’t blame artists for doing so, but when I think of my favorite artists, they know how to take risks and say screw it.

It’s always tough being an independent artist. I feel like there are a million different opinions on how to “make it.” But at the end the day I think art speaks for itself, so if one day I happen to write that perfect song that grips a large audience of people I hope that things will work out for themselves. Either way, I feel privileged to even have the ability to get lost in the process of creating/performing music, even if it’s just a handful of people listening.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
A. Vos is the musical project of Austin Vos out of East Atlanta.

My newest release “Sedona,” is a song I wrote in the Spring of 2019 after a brief trip I made through through Sedona, Arizona the previous summer. The song is meant to represent the day/night cycle of this beautiful place. After the fact I read that some people believe Sedona has this powerful mystical energy, so maybe I was able to translate some of that energy into this song for others to experience. I just let myself go crazy layering a bunch of different sounds, I guess wanted the song to feel like a sort of meditation, with a cathartic release towards the end.
