Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Lane.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Meghan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It’s your typical story of a young girl that was cast as Cogsworth in the award-winning elementary school production of Beauty and the Beast. I was saying lines in funny ways just to make the audience laugh but couldn’t shake the adrenaline rush and fluttery stomach every time I stepped foot on that stage. I’ve been chasing that butterfly feeling ever since but only really started focusing on acting when I left community college and attended the Stella Adler Professional Conservatory in NYC. I currently live in Brooklyn, where I’m constantly auditioning while keeping a balance of determination and patience for my future.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any profession really has a “smooth road”. It all takes focus, heart and thick skin. Nothing worth it will come easy, you’ll have to fight for it and work every day towards a goal. Some people do have that random luck, the right place right time aura, but at some point even that runs, it’s the course and you’re left with the skills you built to succeed in your profession. So, always work at it. A musician doesn’t just sit back after learning a few cords and thinks, “Okay world, come to me.” Any great musician worked tirelessly to perfect their skills and that should be the same for actors. Fall in love with the process, give yourself time and collaborate with the artists around you.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Besides being an actor, I’m your stereotypical artist with four jobs and yes two of them are in the service industry. I pride myself on my work ethic and no matter what the job, acting or not, I’ll give it my all and find the best in it.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I absolutely love these apps: Fitplan for at home workouts/motivations in the gym, Albert’s Savings to help keep an extra sum of money on the side in this unpredictable career and Headspace for meditation before an audition.
One of the best books I have ever read for anyone hoping to start a career in acting but doesn’t know where to look is Jenna Fischer’s “The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide”. It gives you step by step advice from getting headshots, landing an agent and experiencing your first day on set. I’ve read it three times since purchase because it does nothing but lift my spirits and keep me motivated.
Podcasts that I listen to daily are Armchair Expert by Dax Shepard and Monica Padman… actor or not, you can listen to endless amounts of episodes from all walks of life that bring different opinions and challenges to the listener. Inside Acting… a podcast I finished last year after 300 incredibly successful episodes and interviews with any type of actor from famous to just earning their first few IMDb credits. Also Trevor & AJ are wonderful hosts.
Off-Camera Podcast with Sam Jones… long-form discussions with some A list actors. Always a favorite, Sam Jones was born to photograph and interview. I hope to one day be on this podcast!!
Last but not least: Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. Such a bright light of a human that knows all the right ways to keep you calm and connected with your body. Helps me settle into my day and feel relaxed throughout.
