Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasan Nematbakhsh, Esq.
Sasan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Tehran, Iran and moved to the United States when I was 17 with two luggage, a broken English and a ton of motivation and dreams. My first job was a minimum wage position at a grocery store. They interviewed me four times before they accepted me for the job. I did not have a car or a driver’s license so I used to mostly walk back and forth. My journey continued with one gig job after another simply trying to survive and make it to the next chapter of the story.
From not knowing much English to competing with native speaking lawyers in court, I have learnt well that hope and positivity are very strong weapons. But hope without action is like a dream that will never come true. It is that tireless work ethic to keep grinding even without a minute of sleep, days in a row, that has personally helped me to be where I am.
Shaped by this immigration journey, I have utilized this unique experience for my benefit to travel around the world and connect with people of diverse backgrounds. This journey has given me the kind of education that even a law degree has not. Learning about unknown cultures has uniquely helped me with a better perspective.
I have learned that the reality of an individual’s life is very different than what is portrayed in movies or online. In the current world of loud noises and social media, it is imperative that we look deeper than surfaces and give each other a chance to be heard and understood. Whether on the south side of town or east side of the universe, we deserve to be heard and treated fairly.
I would not be where I am today if I had not given that opportunity for the unknowns around me to become more understood and known. Even if I did not agree with them wholeheartedly. Difference of viewpoints is what helps us grow.
To many, they want it. But they don’t have to have it. I had to have it. I felt like I had no other choice. My family and I sacrificed way too much just to settle. When I first moved here, I never imagined that I could one day be an attorney and mediator, appear on local and national media as legal expert and serve as an officer in the State Bar of Georgia Dispute Resolution Section. With dedication, everything is possible. I have come a long way but the journey is not over yet.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My humble beginnings and my eventful journey in the United States has perhaps shaped me more than any other experience would. School of hard knocks is truly the best teacher. While this journey has not been a smooth road, keeping things in perspective has always helped me navigate my way forward.
When you keep in mind that your daily struggles are just part of a natural and healthy journey, it motivates you to keep going and stay positive. The ability to advance and chase your dreams freely without oppressive forces breathing down your neck is not an opportunity to be taken lightly or for granted.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is about being happy with my own journey. To accept the past, stay present and prepare for the future. It is less about comparisons with other people and more about checking items off my own bucket list.
I think our societal idea of success paralyzes us. It makes us more afraid or ashamed to fail. I dare to succeed so I recognize that temporary setbacks are the essential part of growing. I am willing to try so many ways, fail more than I can count so that eventually I can learn about the few ways that actually work. Most people give up by the time that I am just getting warmed up. The secret to success to me is in perseverance, resilience and patience.
