Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Cynthia Thomas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Thomas. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While going through a divorce, I decided to complete my Master’s Degree in Education at Cambridge College in Cambridge, MA in 2000 in order to make myself more marketable as an educator. My thesis was how divorce affects children’s academics. Along with my thesis, I decided to write a children’s book about divorce. In 2016, 17 years later, I decided to get my book published in order to encourage families that were divorced. Xilbris was a publishing company that helped me accomplish my dream.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The publishing of my book was somewhat difficult because I had to find a publishing company that would be reasonable because I self-published my book. I also had to find the original copy of my book with illustrations. Since I had a difficult time finding it at first, I had other artists doing the illustrations and it was just not the same. So once I found it, I was ready to publish it. After I contracted with Xilbris, I had to go through several edits before the book was published.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I have attended various health fairs, schools, churches, and black history events in order to promote my book. I have done several book signings and the book is also in our local library. I just recently launched my book on Facebook in order to reach people of different races, countries of origin, religions, and gender. One of my most proudest moments was when I shared my book with my family and they were so proud of me for such an accomplishment.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe that God had blessed me to share this book with the world because it was 17 years later before I actually shared it and I had a difficult time finding the original copy of my book. But I found it and I believe that it was meant for me to find and share with the world because either we have gone through divorce ourselves or we know someone who has gone through a divorce. The book was written to encourage families that have gone through divorce.
