Meet Jasmine Gibson of Miocoa Strategies in Baltimore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Gibson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been a high-achiever but in college, I had this one moment that changed my trajectory forever. We were assigned a professional development test in my freshmen elective. I had two options: law or communications. I chose digital communications. Because of the unique curriculum and the exploration of each part of communications, I was able to land job after job in marketing roles. I started my career aiding political leaders with their marketing.

As for starting the business, Miocoa Strategies was birthed out of $20k in personal debt, depression and a desire to stop commuting for six hours per day. One day I got tired of the commute and seeing people jump in front of trains and quit my job. I took months deciding the direction of the business, attending 6+ networking events per week and learning the balancing act of being a human and a business owner. In our first year, we serviced over 30 black women business owners and saw consecutive $10k months. I’m not sure what makes me unique but this thing works and is still working.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Personal debt, Lack of financial options, Finding others to connect and build with (peer mentors), Cold calling via email was gruesome, Having to stay at home (noisy, toxic, etc), Feeling alone and isolated.

Miocoa Strategies – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Miocoa Strategies is a digital marketing firm for black women business owners. We specialize in website design, branding, email marketing and social media marketing. We are mostly known for our expertise helping black women identify their audience, and save time and stress on marketing. We hire black women entrepreneurs and work with black women entrepreneurs to elevate and support the growing number of black women opening businesses and building brands.

I am most proud of our organization serving over 50+ black women business owners and being on track for $100k within two years. We’ve done all of this by bootstrapping without financial aid from banks, lenders, etc.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My biggest joy is that our clients are seeing success.

One had their biggest revenue month in five years during March 2020 (Fancy-Free Hair & Skin). One had their biggest revenue month in March 2020 (Uncommon Solutions). One sold out their retreat in 24 hours, making five-figures instantly (Anchored Media by Tatum Temia). One reached a record-high on social media with a workout video that reached 20k views (Sheila Dixon for Mayor).
