Meet Dina Gundersen of Creative Thunder Design in Smyrna and Vinings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dina Gundersen.

Dina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been a graphic designer since graduating with a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in NY. I worked as an art director and web designer at an agency in Atlanta for over 10 years, then went client side as Marketing Director for a custom home builder. During this time, I was actively freelancing as well. In 2008, I went part time at the building company to start my own agency, Creative Thunder Design (CTD). About a year later, CTD became my full-time focus. I am extremely lucky to have a long list of repeat clients, many in the real estate industry. The majority of my business comes from client, industry and friendly referrals, a fact that I appreciate every day.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are always struggles. It was a really big decision to “step off the ledge” to focus on CTD full time – to leave the stability of a salaried job and benefits. 2008 was both the best and worst time to start my own business. It was scary, but I am so glad I did and I have never looked back. The flexibility that this has offered me and my family is priceless. I am VERY lucky that I have a solid stream of business and for all the referrals I am afforded from clients. The paperwork, taxes and administration is always a challenge, and one that I am still trying to improve upon. I am blessed with an amazing accountant and that makes ALL the difference. I have learned a great deal about business, asset management and controlling cash flow from this experience.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Creative Thunder Design – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At Creative Thunder Design, we specialize in small business branding and marketing. I love to help small businesses discover who they are and what their brand should be. We help them develop a story, brand identity, collateral and marketing for their company. We also have a wealth of experience in the real estate industry. With my background in new home construction marketing, many builders have come to us to help with their community marketing, branding and sales center design. I am most proud of the long-standing relationships I have with my clients. Many of whom I have worked with since day one. What makes us unique is that we are ready to help at any point and part of a project. It could be taking on an entire new community (from brand to siteplans, to sale collateral to design of a sales center) or to help only with one small part. We are very agile and flexible and can help at whatever point we are needed.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I am an Atlanta native. One of the rare few! So Atlanta will always have a special place in my heart. I hate the traffic, as does everyone else. But I am lucky to not have to get out in it on a daily basis! I hope to one day retire to somewhere with less humidity, but for now the ATL is where it’s at.
