Meet Sheena Hanley of Shanley Custom Fash’uns in Stone Mountain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Hanley.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sheena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Today, I am blessed to be a fashion designer of my company Shanley Custom Fash’uns! How did this become? Sometime in mid-May 2019, I was recovering from an ACL replacement surgery when I took a nap and woke up unable to breathe. I could feel the literal air being restricted from my lungs with every breath. I found out that I had developed blood clots in my surgery leg, lungs and heart. I was hospitalized for a week and unable to return to work in my usual position, Inventory Control Specialist, at a warehouse in Atlanta. This life-threatening occurrence was an eye opener for me. I had been pushing off fashion designing all of my life due to “life” and what was expected of me instead of doing what I love. I didn’t want to wait any longer for any more excuses as to why I kept waiting for the “right time” to design. So, I did all my research, ordered all the equipment I needed, and started bring my ideas to life. Now I am working on branding my own clothing line as well as bringing other people’s ideas to life through clothing line branding, drop-shipping and custom designing for the average Joe!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road on this journey, LOL! I like to say, “that underneath every smooth road lies a bed of rocks from which it was created”. So, along my Shanley Custom Fash’uns journey I encountered a couple of “rocks”. I had an ACL replacement surgery and then developed blood clots in my leg, lungs and heart. Well let’s rewind the story a little. Before my knee surgery I was out of work with no income waiting on approval from my job to even get surgery. This created a huge strain on me, my family and my wife’s finances, leaving our finances going into what seemed like a never-ending pit. This financial strain has taught my family how to budget and stick with it as well as how important it is to invest! Another “rock” that I stumbled across was that I was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome accompanied by Osteoarthritis in May 2019. This created and still creates a physical challenge for me on a day-to-day basis. Some days I am unable to move like I would like to but SS has taught me to appreciate what I am able to do and to challenge myself to do what may seem impossible!
