Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Upshaw.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I’ve always been good with my words. It began with writing A+ essays in school, and slowly blossomed into writing poetry and raps. By the time I was in middle school, I knew I had a gift. My friends and I would write stories with adult urban themes and pass them out to the kids at school to read in class. Everyone loved our stories. By the time I was in high school, I had over ten books that I had written both by myself and with my friends. I loved writing, but by the time I got to college, I didn’t have the time or passion for it anymore. It wasn’t until years later that I realized that writing was something that I was destined to do. After running into a dead end with my career in the corporate world, I realized that I needed to stop wasting time working a 9 to 5 job that I’m not happy at and work toward building my own business while doing something that I love doing. Throughout the years, I’ve written a host of different materials for school, other people, or just for fun. After lots of thinking and soul searching, I decided to start my own business providing writing services to the people in my community.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely wasn’t smooth sailing to get where I am today (no pun intended, haha). I spent years working different jobs within the corporate field, and sometimes struggling to find work. There were times where I struggled financially. My family and I were scraping pennies together to get by. I also struggled with my inner self, trying to figure out which direction I should go in to work toward building my future. There were a lot of busy days and sleepless nights. Although I wanted to give up many times, I kept the faith. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
Smoove Sailing Services – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is called Smoove Sailing Services. We are an online business that specializes in a variety of writing services ranging from resume re-writing, scriptwriting, music writing, copy editing, proof-reading, and much more. We are most popularly known for our resume revamps. Clients come to us with their outdated resumes and we give them a makeover that makes them stand out and land interviews. What sets us apart from the others is the fact that there are not many companies in the area that provide writing services to the community. I am so proud to be in a position to help those who are in need. I realized after starting this business that there are more people out there in need of writing services than I originally thought!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is being happy and at peace within myself, doing what I love every day while helping people, and being in a position where I can live comfortably and provide for my family at the same time.
