Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayla Jones.
Jayla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a 24-year-old woman that knows her purpose, and I’m proud of it! My name is Jayla Aneissa Jones, and I grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. I was reared in a single-parent household alongside my mother and brother. Growing up, my mother was what you’d deem as the definition of a lady, let alone a woman of God. Being that such a woman raised me, I was groomed not only to take exceptional care of my exterior but to ALWAYS make sure that my insides were just as pretty as the outside.
At a young age, I have always been gifted in things related to beauty, and often time I noticed that that was how I made friends. I bonded with other young girls over talking about how I did my hair, how I painted my nails, where I shopped for my favorite clothes, and eventually, when I got older, how I do my makeup. This was something that has always stuck with me from elementary school to now. The fact that God uses something simple as being a “Pretty Girl” to connect his daughters into divine connection is something that I eventually understood.
While in college, my mother passed away leaving me really trying to understand my purpose, and after deep soul searching, and long talks with God, he finally showed me not only that my purpose was to lead young women into freedom, but he also let me know that he created me to be “Pretty on Purpose,” which sparked the instructions to create a sense of community for women of God. We always hear how pretty girls are usually the “mean girls,” and I wanted to not only switch that narrative but to also create a safe space for women to cultivate relationships with one another while also serving God.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Things have definitely not always been a smooth road. My mother passed away while I was in college. (September 2015). Being that she passed away during my sophomore year of college, and I was only 19 years old, I felt like I lost everything I ever knew, and to be honest, I did. I have a very small immediate family, so my mother was like our “glue.” I dealt with depression for a good portion of my time in college, but I went back to what I knew, and that was to go deeper in God, and things are so much better.
We’d love to hear more about Pretty on Purpose.
“Pretty on Purpose” is an online-based community/ministry for women. We specialize in creating content to reach women of God, ranging from small groups (in-person and online) to videos and blog posts. We are known to bring God’s pretty daughters together for a bigger purpose, and to ultimately create divine connections. We are most proud of the women that have gone deeper with their relationship with God as a result of being connected with Pretty on Purpose. Seeing other women either establish a relationship with God or deepen their relationship, find their purpose, and meet other like-minded women makes my heart smile. The fact that we can incorporate real-life things that women go through while basing everything in faith sets Pretty on Purpose out from the rest.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Pretty on Purpose has big plans for the future and we are developing plans to touch the nation. However God wants to use Pretty on Purpose in the days and years to come, I will be obedient to serve God’s people. I am looking forward to teaming up with other women’s ministries to create a National Women’s Conference and Retreat.
