Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Flanders.
Trevor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Twin Criminal is a three-piece rock n roll band from Atlanta. The story starts with the dissolution of my previous band, Cloudeater. The band broke up and I wrote a new rock n roll record as fast as I could. I needed a fresh project with finished songs and recordings so as to find rock-solid musicians that wanted to take on something new. Those songs would become “NONES,” our first Twin Criminal record. With it, I was able to recruit Daniel Friedman and Danny Paschall, formerly of Cloudeater and Ike Willis’ touring band, respectively.
With this new, fully formed lineup, we wrote and recorded our latest record- “Backsliding.” Released last year, “Backsliding” is a step forward for us in every way. Having a full band to write songs with has allowed the sound of Twin Criminal to stretch and move in new directions.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve never been a part of a passion project or music group that was smooth. Writing, performing, and bankrolling the entirety of the first record was definitely more than I anticipated. Especially when a final line up and more equitable songwriting duties can take a band pretty far from where you started sonically. These things are all for the best. A second Twin Criminal record as a solo venture would not have been nearly as good as what we have made and become.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am the guitarist and main vocalist in Twin Criminal. I also take care of most of the behind the scenes stuff, ie: social media and booking as well as art direction for album covers and promo. As a band, I would say we are known mostly for our sound profile. We walk a line that other Atlanta bands aren’t at the moment. The live set and recorded albums combine speed, heavy guitars, melody and subversive song structures in a way that makes the hard rock formula fresh again.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Twin Criminal has an entire album’s worth of material we’re sitting on right now ready to be recorded. Whether or not we’ll record a whole album at once or record singles to be released sporadically is up for debate. We also have some shows booked but it remains to be seen whether or not it will be safe to perform in the coming months. Cross your fingers!
