Meet Chi Uwazurike – Lé Don

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chi Uwazurike  – Lé Don.

Chi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I fell in love with Fashion in 2010 and attained my first business in 2011. I was so dedicated to fashion, creating and designing. I was a bio-chem student at Wayne State University. I changed my major to economics and minor in business to help me excel in my business. I figured in order to follow my passion. I had to learn about the market and also how to do business in it. I’ve managed to stay consistent for almost a decade.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey has not been smooth but that’s what life is all about. There has to be some obstacles because the journey is way more important than the destination. Some struggles I had coming up in the industry were convincing people that I stood out from others. People will ask you to “hook them up” with your clothing and you spend so much time and effort in designing it, you give to them and they don’t even wear it or tag you when they do. That was one of my biggest pet peeves because, as a designer, “I’m sensitive about my shit.” I had to learn that you don’t get what you deserve but rather what you negotiate. I repositioned myself to make sure my designs were worth every dollar, now they pay for it and wear it proudly and excited to tag me.

Le Don Collection – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an entrepreneur, TasteMaker, Experience Curator and Cultural Influencer. Le Don collection was formed in order to represent what being the best in your discourse really means. Our slogan goes “Progression Requires Movement.” This means that it doesn’t matter how fast or how slow you move, as long as there is movement, then there is progress. I’m also a huge advocate for mental wellness. I have visited over 30 schools providing them lunch, speaking to them about the importance of education, following their dreams and applying their skills to make sure their future is secure. I started this “my future is secure” movement last year to make sure students from kindergarten through 12th grade understand how much power they hold. I also teamed up with Blavity to generate more youth votes during this past election in November. We held this event at Wayne state university. There has been a disconnect within the youth/millennials often because they feel they aren’t heard, or their vote doesn’t count. I decided to engage them by using my social platform and connecting them to things that may grab their attention, which led to having a voters registration party/game night. This included hiring a DJ, host(me), food, drinks and giveaways.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success means to have a goal, plan the steps to achieve the goal, implement the plan, and finally achieve the goal. When it comes to my goals and visions, I want my clothing to represent a sense of motivation and representation of hard work, patience and dedication to the next generation. I plan to achieve a goal I have set for myself and always produce a high quality before the deadline.
