Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Walters.
I am a native of Rochester, NY and moved to Atlanta, GA to attend Clark Atlanta University; where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree.
In 2008, my life changed suddenly with the untimely and devastating death of my mother; Patricia “Trisha” Ann Walters. This life-changing incident was traumatic both emotionally and physically because of our love and strong bond. We communicated by phone or text message at least two times every day. The influence of a nurturing and dedicated mother has an irreplaceable effect on a child. I was instinctively inspired by my mother’s compassion for family and friends alike as well as her determination to achieve goals. In the early 70’s, notwithstanding the odds, she pursued her dream of becoming a high-fashion model. As a single parent with a high school education, her dream-career manifested and spanned through the early 90’s in runway modeling, editorial and television. She was noted as a trailblazer in New York State for African-American models.
After receiving professional counseling and experiencing the sustaining love of God; I was convinced that it takes grieving to overcome grief, not time. Although, the void of her presence remains; I am no longer burdened with the heaviness of my mother’s death. The pain actually fostered my empathic nature (taking other’s perspective) and further equipped me to support others. As a result of my heart-healing, I launched Patricia’s Daughter to publicly honor my mother and all mothers.
Additionally, in April, I became a certified Abundant Life Coach. My goal is to successfully guide others by improving their mindset and taking action in life. Providing support as they work through areas in their lives that are not healed or are depleted.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fortunately, I have not experienced many struggles. I am blessed to have a remarkable inner-circle of friends and peers who encourages me; along with a mentor whose savvy business acumen provides great insight.
Patricia’s Daughter – Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company?
On May 4, 2019, Patricia’s Daughter launched by hosting a Mother Day brunch in honor of all beloved mothers. Our focus is to celebrate life & legacy of mothers while encouraging those who grieve a mother.
Our Mission: To create and promote eventful experiences that show honor to mothers in tangible a way.
Our Vision: We influence people by providing opportunities to act on honoring the life and legacy of the mother who they love.
I am most proud of my supporters who champion our cause and our community involvement. In just a years’ time the vision is being realized. In fact, at last year’s Mother’s Day event we presented a portion of our ticket sales proceeds to The Drake House; an agency that provides emergency housing for families, primarily led by Mothers. We also support and partner with Kate’s Club a non-profit that empowers children & young adults (providing social and therapeutic programming) by facing life after the death of a parent or sibling. With the help of our supporters, we purchased numerous items on their Amazon wish list. Additionally, this March we raised funds (and exceeded our goal) that covered the cost of their family night dinner for over 75 members and volunteers.
Given this year’s COVID-19 crisis, our 2020 Mother’s Day celebration was still recognized with a balloon release. Special thanks to my sister, Ebony-hope and niece Genesis-life for their gracious support and efforts behind the scenes.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. We are fortunate to live in a hospitable and progressive city that is women and family-focused. I have great opportunities to network and collaborate with established and other up-and-coming organizations in our city.
