Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaziee Morgan.
Kaziee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a broke college student, plain and simple. I also wasn’t able to find a job for a while due to pre-judgements because of my name. To get by I relied on braiding, something I’ve been able to do since I was five years old. After about a year, I finally found a job, but the hair business had stared to pick up and I wasn’t going to turn down free money! So, I worked during the day, attended school in the evening and braided hair at night. Eventually, I made more money braiding hair than I did at my job, so I quit. Made a vow with God that I would never work a 9-5 again, and I haven’t had to since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was NOT smooth! And quitting your job and solely relying on 1 source of shaky income is NOT for everyone! I’ve faced overdraft fees, late rent notices, almost having to drop out of college, working in a shop one day and suddenly being out of a job the next, threats of being sued, and so much more! It’s not for the faint at heart at all!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a cosmetologist who specializes in braiding and twisting hair. I’m mostly known for twists, especially the Senegalese and Spring twists. I’m especially proud of my “Seamless Spring Twists” because that is something I had to brainstorm and discover MY way to install them. I twist them in, which gives a more natural look to them, most of my clients get told that people think that it IS their real hair! Pretty much every braider starts spring twists off with a braid and THEN twist, or they crochet it in. My clients were already spoiled with my Senegalese twists so I had to find a way to twist in Spring Twists as well! Thus, my Seamless Spring Twists were born, my baby! I also have a special blend of oils “KAYJAH Hair & Scalp Mist” as well as a scalp exfoliant that I cultivated. I use those in combination to fight dandruff for myself and my clients.
What were you like growing up?
A “frog” as my mom would say! I was all over the place! Silly, smart, way too giving, a “human garbage disposal” and had expensive taste. Not much has changed. I was always in honors courses, and graduated high school top 10% of my class; ranked #12 out of 320. As far as interests, I loved to sing, read, eat and most of all BRAID! I also loved music overall, and briefly played the drums & was teaching myself to play the piano.
