Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Slaughter.
Ryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I initially went to school for cosmetology and quickly found out I didn’t really like doing hair. I was lost, I had just graduated from high school and like many of my peers, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I found an Interest in Makeup. I would watch tutorials and anything that had something to do with makeup. That’s when my interest for makeup turned into love. I bought my first makeup kit and taught myself what I thought were the ins and outs. I was doing a pretty good job, so I thought! I was still working my 9-5 and I had a few clients here and there but still was not satisfied. Eventually, I had to make some decisions. I went to school to become a Master Makeup Artist, not only doing beauty makeup but Theatrical and Special Effects! Shortly after, my job closed, leaving me laid off but I wasn’t sad. It gave me the push I needed. I started my Mobile Makeup Business and never looked back!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like many first-time business owners, you experience a time where you feel like things are moving in slow motion. Makeup is a special event kind of business. Women only get their Makeup done for Special Occasions. So there was a time where I felt discouraged. My advice is to keep pushing, keep posting, keep going! No one knows that business is slow but you. So post those pics, someone will see. Always, always, always put yourself out there!
We’d love to hear more about Fanelli’s Faces.
I’m a Master Makeup Artist! Specializing in Natural beauty makeup, Theatrical Makeup, and Special FX! Not only am I capable of doing Beauty Makeup, I do face painting for kids, and Halloween looks. I’m most proud of being able to do special effects. I’ve always been interested in movies and how they make things look so real! I had to learn!
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Generally speaking, I feel as though women get a bad rap. We have to fight so much harder to get respect and the opportunities that virtually given to men. Me especially being a WOC, I see constantly. I have to smile so much harder to not portrayed as angry.
