Meet Kendricke Brown of K-Major in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendricke Brown.

Kendricke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my journey in music in 2005. I founded 3MG Entertainment, LLC in 2009. I started doing open mics and showcases to get my name out. In 2006 I signed with a management company. That deal did not work out but I learned a lot in my two year contract. During that time, I crossed paths with artist like, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, Yung Joc, Ying Yang Twins, and Mike Jones. I was only 15-16 years old. Shortly after the deal I created the name 3MG or MasterMindsMusic Group. 3 (M’s) and a (G). Me and a follow classmate of mine became a group. I was the rapper/singer/producer and he was a rapper. We entered into many showcases and contest and started creating a buzz. I changed my name from K-Swag to K-Major and we started branding. I would get a lot of feature opportunities as a solo artist/producer and it took a toll of the group dynamic. In the summer of 2009, we separated and I began my solo career. I was also graduating high school. 3MG became a company instead of a group. I assembled three of other classmates as dancers / artist for my new company and we began touring on our own. My Brother and my Father took lead as My management. I went on to perform on the Black College Tour, 106&Park, and performed on the “Chitterling” market for about three to four years.

In 2011, I landed my first TV placement with BET The Game. This sparked something in me. I began to catch the attention of young celebrities and influencers. In 2012 I linked with my friend Darnell Robinson. His family is the Sugar Hill Gang and his grandmother Sylvia Robinson founded SugarHill Records. Darnell introduced me to many people in the industry including Jbar from SODMG, Lil Twist and Lil Chuckee from Young Money, Issa, and Jacquees. Me and Jacquees began our working relationship and soon put out or first work together “Fan Affiliated in 2013.” This would come to be the first time in my career I was labeled a singer/songwriter. In 2014, I met an investor and continued my solo career while producing and songwriting. I caught the attention of music manager Coach K but we never went through with business. By late 2014, I caught the attention of Grammy Winning Producer, “Tricky Stewart.” I soon entered a recording contract with his company Redzone Entertainment and Capitol Records. After spending one year in the deal we dissolved the contract and negotiated a Co-Publishing deal. I was breaking and needed the money. After spending two years in contract I landed my first placement “Moses” by French Montana ft. Chris Brown & Migos. I Co-Produced it with DJ Spinz.

Although I produced and wrote for other artist, Spinz believed in my artistry. We went on to record a classic, Category V. This would become my biggest project to date. The lead single was titled after the project. My career began to feel like a career at this point. Me and Spinz placed multiple records and he introduced me to Southside of 808Mafia. I went on to co-produce records for Playboi Carti, Future, Jacquees (Now with Cash Money), Lil Uzi Vert, and more. I landed movie placements with WWE and Magic Mike XXL. 3MG Entertainment began to be branded as a premier Publishing entity. I signed producers such as Nash B and Murphy Kid. Both producers went on to place major records and have both now fulfilled their contracts and started their own businesses. Currently I have four number #1 records and numerous records that have charted on the BillBoard TOP 100. Me & Jacquees went on to work on the albums, 19 & King Of R&B. In total I had nine songs between the two albums. I have released seven solo albums and have a total of 238 works in my public catalog.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has been a rocky road. The biggest obstacle has been finances. I’ve always had vision but this industry is expensive to compete in. I’ve never been a viral artist. My music and talent have always been well but my marketing has always slacked. I don’t know how to gain the masses without having financial backing. At times early on, I thought my talent would speak for itself but with the birth of the internet it has been a struggle.

We’d love to hear more about your music.
I’m a business man and my company is known for supplying quality work. I specialize in enhancing talent. I would say I’m known for artist development and business development. I teach each client I work with the ins and outs of the business industry and also how to exploit their potential. Yes, I’m an artist but I feel like my quality of work attracts others to want to work with me. That’s what separates me and others. Just by being in a room with me and watching me work you will gain years of knowledge in one setting. I mean that in the humblest way possible. I’ve had artist meet me because of something they heard and then ask me to manage them the next minute. Seeing my business go from an idea in 5th grade to a reality is what I’m most proud of. I’ve done movies, major albums, worked with legends, did business side by side with legends, and have developed award winning talent.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes I feel like Atlanta is premier for establishing blacked owned businesses. This is the foundation for some of the greatest businesses in the world. It’s an honor to run a successful business in Atlanta, GA.
