Meet Sandra Porter of Star Artistry in Riverdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Porter.

Sandra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, it was clear that I had a unique talent for makeup artistry. As I got more into the world of makeup, I decided that I wanted to start my own cosmetics line. I wanted to start a few years back but wasn’t financially able. I was also very busy with my full-time job and being a full-time student. I attended Clark Atlanta University and the vibe there pushed me to wanting to jumpstart my line. Personally, I have sensitive skin and I wanted to formulate products for all skin types. I started doing more research on the cosmetic industry to figure out the best way to start my company. Originally, I wanted to jumpstart my business as an eyebrow line as that’s one of my favorite parts of makeup and build from there. I started contacting different cosmetic manufacturers, and eventually went with the best fit for my brand. I worked closely with my manufacturers to ensure that we came up with the best formula for Star Artistry. Once everything was complete, I did wear a test on myself and other friends to ensure I was putting out a great product, and Star Artistry was ready to be sold. I launched my line a few weeks after starting medical school.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting any business is not always a smooth road. Time to actually perfect your craft is a huge thing to consider when starting anything on your own. As for me, I worked for the most part and had to focus on my studies. I would say my main struggles were coming up with the money and perfecting the formulas.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
What sets Star Artistry apart from others is the fact that we specialize in vegan, eco-friendly cosmetics. We are an affordable black-owned cosmetics line based out of Atlanta. Everything produced through Star Artistry is created with cosmetic formulating chemist. We do not work with any vendors and take time to perfect every product that is produced and sold.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very bubbly and very outgoing. I was a little tomboyish, but I wanted to always look nice and enhance my features. I ventured off into makeup more so at the beginning of high school. In middle-school, I always played around with my eyebrows and trying new trends as I have older sisters who I would like to I mimic. and was into makeup. I was very interested in sports, which I joined the soccer, basketball and track team. I was also very bold and loved to stand out.
