Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon McCollum.
Shannon McCollum is a self-taught photographer who has mastered his craft through more than 25 years’ experience capturing the spirit and energy of some of the world’s most legendary performers. His keen ability to translate the moving picture, spoken word and musical masterpiece into singular, monumental images can be traced to the work of his father, a retired photojournalist whose work with Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela and more graced the walls throughout his childhood home. Launched into the spotlight after an appearance on MTV’s Sweet 16 reality show, McCollum’s photo background started much earlier. His father gave him his first camera, lenses and film as a young man just reaching adulthood.
In an era when photography is accessible, ever-present and instantaneous, McCollum creates candid portraits that escalate the photographic medium beyond the glossy commercial image. His genteel southern charm, quick wit and worldliness allow him to record the evolution of groups such as OutKast from their burgeoning career as regional artists to multi-platinum global phenomena. McCollum’s recognizable portraits include cultural and entertainment icons like President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, BB King, Lenny Kravitz, Janelle Monae, Andrew Young, Coretta Scott King, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, George Lopez, DL Hughley, Brian McKnight, Cedric the Entertainer, Erykah Badu, John Legend, Notorious BIG, Killer Mike and Lil Wayne.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles were not getting paid on a lot of Gigs. Touring with some artist and not being reimbursed for certain things. But in the entertainment industry you will definitely have this happen to you at one point or another.
