Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Ledyard.
Kendra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started in February of 2016. I initially started in the beauty industry selling hair extensions. As time went on, I realized that I no longer wanted to do it as a “side hustle” anymore, I wanted to expand. In order to expand, I knew that I needed a brand as well as other materials. However, I didn’t want to hire a designer. So one day I hopped on PicsArt and gave it a go with designing my logo, marketing material, and more. After spending some time creating my own material, it hit me that I was actually enjoying what I was doing. Eventually, I became intrigued and wanted to learn more about graphic design and actually building a brand.
I elevated to where I am today because I invested and believed in myself. I dived headfirst into the graphic design industry and took advantage of every available opportunity that existed (free courses, E-books from other designers, etc.) and I even had a mentor at the time.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been challenging yet very rewarding. I’m certainly not afraid to admit that my biggest struggle was simply comparing myself to other designers. I became discouraged on a daily basis and always wondered why I wasn’t where they were with their business. For some reason, I always felt like I was coming up short. I then realized that each business had some sort of uniqueness about it that no one else had to offer. That’s what really makes you stand out the most in this industry. After that, I put my feelings in my purse and worked diligently to build my brand and ended up generating $25k last year just doing logos alone. From that very moment, I knew I was capable of doing anything that I put my mind and effort into.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’m always on the fence when I’m asked this question. A part of me feels like the graphic design industry will continue to evolve and innovate. Designers will never become obsolete, simply because graphic design software can’t create designs themselves. It’s something to think about. Also, I think the biggest shift will be people designing their own material in free apps such as Canva, Phonto, PicsArt, because it’s less expensive and a quick fix. As far as trends, I’d definitely say more brands will continue to transition into modern/timeless designs and I love to see it! Less is always more.
