Today we’d like to introduce you to Akevo Jenkins.
Akevo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had a passion for filmmaking. Throughout high school and into college this passion grew but I never knew how to develop it further. I would come up with these stories spur of the moment and the next thing I knew I was writing 20 pages for it. One day I decided to just do it; researched equipment to buy and basically taught myself. I already had a history with editing and audio and, to my surprise, cinematography came natural to me. I knew then that I wanted to direct my visions and bring them to life. When I think of a story, my mind runs wild. I can see every detail. I can feel the emotion which carries the story scene to scene. In 2018, I directed my first short film “Unknown” and in 2019 I directed my second short “Sarah’s Journey”. I’m also the “A” in a sketch comedy show “The Q and A Show”. I have dozens of projects that I’m hoping to knock out in the coming years that range from short films and feature lengths to an Anthology series I’m working on. With all these talented cast and crew in Atlanta, I’m positive I can get this done.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think with any passion you will run into obstacles as you progress further down your path. For me, it was self-doubt and constantly comparing myself to what others around me were doing. Patience is everything in this field; few make it overnight. I had to focus on myself and my stories. You have to believe that what you are doing at this moment is everything, put your all into it, and not worry what others around you are doing. Focusing on my work has allowed me to grow and really tell my stories the way they deserve to be told.
We’d love to hear more about the company.
My company is called MisterAFilms. I’m a new filmmaker/Director. I’m also a writer and an editor. I’m great and visualizing any story in vivid detail and bringing it to life. I’m known for my stories that cross every genre. What I’m most proud of is my first two short films being nominated twice in film festivals and one of them winning an “honorable mention”. MisterAfilms differs from other companies with its content. I hope in the years to come that the name will be recognized throughout the film community for this.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is the perfect place to be a filmmaker. When I started, I reached out to people associated with the various film communities and everyone has been so helpful. I’ve worked with numerous people already in the field, be it cast or crew, and the amount of talent this city has is unbelievable.
