Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Jean Baptiste.
Tamara, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started off by doing my own hair. I would always get compliments on my hairstyles and then I started doing it on others. I started my business less than a year ago by having a back to school sale. I was charging $30 for hair installs just to build my clientele. As clientele grew, bundles were high in demand and my talent was quickly advancing. I decided to start selling hair, designer bonnets/durags, and customizing hair also.
Has it been a smooth road?
Becoming my own boss has not been a smooth road. Some of the difficulties I encountered was finding a good vendor that sells top quality hair. I had to go part time from my regular job to chase my dream and due to the demand of my business. Which is actually a good thing for me. Advertising and marketing my brand was another obstacle to overcome. I wanted to get my name out there, I wanted Plugz Boutique to be known. It’s still in the works! Slowly but surely I’m accomplishing my daily goals to advance my company.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Plugz Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in lace installs. I sell hair (wigs and bundles) and designer bonnets. I’m most known for my designer bonnets and durags. Something that Im most proud of is the support that I receive from customers across the United States and now even overseas. I’m getting recognized by huge hair companies and also brand ambassadors with high influence. Something that sets me apart from others is that my prices are budget friendly, my work speaks for itself, and my work etiquette.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next few years, I want to open up a Beauty Bar, own a warehouse in the US, and expand my business to a clothing line as well.
