Meet Dr. Margaret Alabi of The Pivot Consulting Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Margaret Alabi.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Alabi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From completing my Pharm D and never dispensing a pill a day in my life to pivoting my personal brand to be marketable for any opportunity I choose to pursue, I’ve developed a deep understanding of what sustainable personal and career growth looks like over my ten years in the pharmaceutical industry.

As a coaching professional, I take pride in helping people get from where they are, to where they want to be without compromising their authenticity to achieve their goals. I enjoy working with mid-career professionals and executives to help them up-level their success and transform their current goals into their next achievements.

Being the firstborn of Nigerian immigrants new to the city of Atlanta in the late 80s prepared me for a number of contrasting points in my life in which I learned the benefit of a good pivot. I have dedicated myself to modeling pivoting processes that yield the highest rates of success with the least amount of effort possible!

My first pivot came at the age of 13, I noticed that my academic pursuits were suffering from distractions typical of the high school scene, like the latest fashions, popularity, etc. Having started school a year early and opting to forgo an additional opportunity to skip ahead, I was all too familiar with the benefits of a great education and by the time I started high school, my family had experienced a hard financial downturn which made going to school dreadful (first world girl problems, lol I know!). Instead of focusing on what I didn’t have, I chose to pivot my attention to what I had that could never be taken from me. My ability to think…it was at that point that I chose to transfer out of Redan High School to Columbia High School’s Science and Technology Magnet Program to decrease distractions and focus on my education. By doing so I was able to land an entrance interview with Princeton University, ultimately deciding to attend Xavier University of Louisiana to pursue my Pharm D.

I could list a myriad of experiences in my life that mirror the aforementioned and each follows the same trend: a challenge that presents an opportunity to pivot for success!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not! LOL! The struggle that really helped me to solidify who I am and ensure that I was clear on who I wanted to be, came during my post-doctoral fellowship.

Despite being a doctor, I was treated like an administrative assistant, I was often left off of large projects, maligned by colleagues, and given little to no visibility to key decision-makers within our organization.

It was an untenable working environment that challenged me to show up. I was here and I knew that giving up due to bullying was inconsistent with my values of autonomy and individuality. It was at this point that I made one of the biggest pivots of my life! I was able to pivot from a place of no choice to freedom of choice once I realized how to be more authentically me. This allowed me to create conditions necessary for notable success, gain the attention of the North American President of our commercial business, and secure my first role upon completing my fellowship program.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Pivot Consulting Group – what should we know?
The Pivot Consulting Group is a career and life transformation coaching practice and a diversity and inclusion career advocate.

Our vision and mission are to progress people towards their career aspirations and their life’s purpose.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The Pivot Consulting Group would not exist today without David Alabi, my brother, and co-founder. In his final year at Albany State University, he asked me to prepare him for his series of interviews, a service that he and his peers sought at the university but were left wanting. And like that, our business was born! Over the course of our work with individual clients, a greater need surfaced. Once people secured their new jobs, they desired to know how to thrive as opposed to survive. We pivoted our business to include dynamic leadership coaching, which helps the individual show up as their best self no matter what situation they find themselves in.

We have appreciated the opportunity to train future pharmacists at Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy on an annual basis through our Gallup Certified Lead With Strengths program.

We’ve been featured as speakers at career programs hosted by the C5 Georgia Youth Foundation, Emerging 100 of Atlanta, and The AUC National Society of Black Engineers.

Our most cherished clients are our individual clients who also double as our supporters, spanning companies such as Wells Fargo, Genetech, Eli Lilly, GE Digital and Novelis to name a few.
