Today we’d like to introduce you to Vernon Barrett-Dozier Jr.
Vernon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA I have seen my love of cooking start at home. My mom would always cook for me and it would bring me so much joy. That foundation had allowed me to bring the same joy to other people when I began to pursue culinary arts almost 11 years ago, whew I’m starting to feel it. That’s the exciting part, being able to showcase your talents and skills to people and it actually brings them joy. I moved to Atlanta, GA in May 2017. Being in this beautiful city has allowed me to grow as a chef as well as a business owner. From pop-ups, private dinners, weddings and all types of parties, I still get the same joy of creating something that you will always remember.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not at all. At times your personal life can interfere with your business life from physically, emotionally, mentally even financially. Me moving from PA to GA fresh out of college was a big challenge all the way around.

Chef Barrett Jr’s Catering is something I always pushed my self to create. I also do private dinners, personal chef matters (meal prep, etc.), pop-ups, weddings and corporate lunches. I want to make sure I am well equipped to handle any type of event you throw at me. I am proud of the support that my business has gained over these last few years. Without people pushing me, I don’t know where my business would be. The motto I go by is “Fresh. Innovative, Personal.” I shop where the food is fresh, my goal is to bring something different to your event and also develop a relationship with the people I work with.
What were you like growing up?
When I was younger, I had a real bad stuttering problem. So I was always quiet, stayed to myself, played video games and basketball. I didn’t get into the internet until my teenage years.
