Today we’d like to introduce you to April Whiting.
April, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began sewing when I was about 11 years old and, believe it or not, I learned by reading the instruction manual. Over many trials and experiments, I found my way through sewing, and too through the fashion world. Graduating from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 2018 I released my first independent collection and fashion gallery entitled Primary Collection that challenged me as a designer and budding businesswomen in every way and helped to define my direction in the artful industry. Since then, I have continued to hone my skills as a designer and craft my brand as I change and develop further in my passion.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think anything worth having is not easy to come by. Being a designer and creative is something I feel is a part of me. There are days I have major business wins and my designs come out exactly as I imagine them… but there are others where things go completely wrong in ways I never thought they could. I have faced issues with sourcing fabric, coordinating events and even working with independent businesses that did not live up to their word. As part of being a businesswoman, I learned that I have to breathe through and focus my energy on positive solutions. I ended up taking the creative route and making a few one of a kind jackets from ‘damaged’ fabrics I’ve received.

April Jayne is a fashion brand specializing in custom apparel for men and women. Our fun and sophisticated designs feature classic vintage silhouettes with a modern sense of sleek. Jumpsuits and rompers are our favorites; April Jayne designs a wide range of unique jumpsuits and rompers that flatter any body frame because we make it custom for you. As a company, we pride ourselves on fit, comfort, and style of our pieces. With roots in technical design and tailoring, fit is the most important part of an April Jayne look. We are constantly inspired to create unique looks that not only serve but also serve you.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination and self-motivation are the most important factors in my success. My love for creating beautiful designs inspires me to keep growing as a designer and push my business despite the status quo. Along the way, you will have people who want something else for you but only you know what’s best for your life. With that being said, the ability to take criticism is also a key element of my success.
