Meet Chassidy Jade of Crown Me Royal Labs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chassidy Jade.

Chassidy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
While going through a “troubled teen” phrase I started when I was 15 years old. I had a mentor by the name of Ron Crawford who was in the industry and took me under his wing to stay out of trouble. I got a scholarship, went to school, and the rest is history. Once I got out of college, I started in live production going on tour with Chris Brown and Big Sean. However, things were definitely not easy. I went through a dry spell and produced my first film Brown Ballerina. It ended up going viral and we were selected to Toronto Shorts Film Festival and created a small tour to shop the film. After that, I started working in commercial television under Viacom and Warner Brothers. On the side, I started my own production company, Crown Me Royal Labs. Always being a creative, I started personally curating art shows highlighting designers, dancers, visual artists, and other filmmakers. It’s been a very long road of ups and downs but consistency is everything.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve always been the only women, the youngest, and often only black with companies I’ve worked with. This is definitely a man’s world. Being respected as a good filmmaker versus them seeing me as a little girl was always a challenge. Sometimes it still is. I just make sure my work always speaks for itself before anything. Also keeping up with consistent work can be difficult. One gig doesn’t always lead to the next. I’ve had to take jobs outside the industry just to stay afloat. Hollywood is fickle and you have to be created. Creating my own brand and different streams of income is key.

Crown Me Royal Labs – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a contractor, I am a video editor. I am known for signature commercial work. I have a very edgy fast-paced style that lots of brands look for.

I own a production company called Crown Me Royal Labs. We specialize in creating video content and curate art shows for independent artists. We also have a non-profit branch the gives high school film students film equipment and relief efforts in the Caribbean.

Our first film Brown Ballerina was a huge success touring over the US, Canada, and UK. We are most known for our annual Visuals and Vibes art show hosting over 500 attendees. I think what sets CMRL apart is our dedication to local indie artists in the community who’s artistry in unique and not seen by the masses. Our content tells stories that need to be heard. I’m most proud that everything we do is with a purpose. Giving back is key to rebuilding our own communities.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by what makes you happy. It’s not always also about money and fame. If I can take of myself with doing what I love and helping my people – that’s success to me.
