Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Thomas.
Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had a dream for years to launch an agency that helps guide people through the process of growing their businesses online so they can enjoy the fruits of their labor offline. I founded Yonder to help businesses maximize their impact. My work history brings over twenty years of experience working for the big dogs like Coca-Cola, LG and Delta in marketing, tech, and design.
Our clients rest easy knowing they can rely on their websites and ads to bring in high-quality leads all year round. Their marketing machines just hum along, which means they can focus on delivering top-notch services for their customers. We can make that happen for your business, too.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I grew up in the mountains of North Georgia and moved to the city late in elementary school. I struggled because I had a learning disability and could barely read at the age of ten. Around that time, learning disabilities weren’t as common, and I continued to struggle. I graduated high school early and started touring with bands playing the harmonica and trying to figure out what I was supposed to do with my life. I tried to get a job at an agency that specialized in concert posters, but I got fired within a week.
I spent my early years trying to climb into an industry that I could succeed in, and after hard work and reading a ton of books about design, the creative process and user experience, I landed a job at the third largest engineering firm in the world and became one of the youngest director-level personnel there. However, six months into the job, the market crashed, and after that, I found myself touring with bands again. During that time, a small church called and asked if I wanted to be a creative director (I wasn’t even aware that churches had creative directors), and for the next ten years, I helped churches grow through marketing and design. The last church I worked with had 15,000 members and had an art director. My job was to help manage the experience from the car doors to the seats, and lots of people know that experience can be scary and can suck. My job was to make it not suck.
After a while, I got burned out working 60-hour weeks, and I knew my wife and I wanted to grow a family. I left something I worked in for ten years and learned the landscape of corporate America, but there, I quickly realized I was a number instead of a person, and that I was passionate about using my talents acquired at larger corporations for small businesses, and then I started thinking about how to build Yonder.
