Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Abbey.
Joshua, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m originally from Ghana, West Africa. I started my business during my final semester in college, and the initial reason for choosing to do photography was to be able to do business to serve as a source of income in case I don’t land a job after school. Few months down the line after building up my photography skills I came to the realization that photography wasn’t just about taking pictures and sending it back to clients in exchange for money but rather an art that when one learns about lighting techniques, positioning subjects, adding props, post-processing the captured image into how you want the image to be viewed by the help of basic photoshop skills, it can convey a message to the viewer, this led me into focusing on a particular niche which is portrait photography. I started hitting up random models on Instagram and shooting them for fun. Eventually, I got noticed by some “big” Instagram accounts and they started sharing my works and that made me gain a lot of followers on Instagram.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been rough for me as I recently moved to the US just because most of my clients are back in my home country Ghana. People do not know about my work here and also I’ve been mostly occupied by schoolwork. I’m currently a Graduate student at North Carolina A&T, studying to become a Data Scientist. I’ve hit some few models in town just to shoot them for free and get a little exposure in this new environment. I’ve also been referred by friends to some few clients to get paid for my work. I’ve also been contacted by some few companies to do fashion shoots for them. So its not that bad but I’m hopeful about future opportunities in my photography business.
Primus Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My specialty is into portrait photography, I shoot events such as weddings as well, I recently shot a Beautiful wedding in Ohio. What most of my followers do not know that I also do is food and product photography, I have done product shoots for a lot of big companies in my Home country that I don’t post for them to see. I am most proud of how much I have invested in myself within this short period. Whatever I put my mind to doing, I put in my soul to see it become successful.
What clearly differentiates photographers is their editing styles 80% of the time. Obviously, anybody can buy a camera and learn how to take pictures but the editing styles show the difference, it portrays how the creative sees his/her subject and how he/she wants it to be seen, this is where the art comes in! People who follow my works can easily identify a portrait image without my logo in it.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is relative, any objective you set for yourself and able to complete or achieve is success to me. One’s success could be to complete high school and get a job, that is success to him/her. Another’s success could be to continue with college, complete graduate school, PHD and find a job. That is success as well. It doesn’t have to be on the same level because all hands are not equal.
