Meet DeShelle Burrowes of The Pathway to Wellness in Stockbridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeShelle Burrowes.

DeShelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After the birth of my second son, I decided to go back to school for my Masters’ Degree. I went in knowing that I wanted to work with women that has issues related to making transitions and trauma. I had a history of both and knew the benefits of being supported through these oftentimes difficult situations.

I also garnered skills working and supporting women in a local Rape Crisis center which further led me to seeking to help survivors and to gain as much knowledge as I can to support these women through difficult situations.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Is it ever? Most of my struggles have been financial. It is hard for a new clinician starting out, trying to find ways to be individualized in this field. I was lucky enough to find therapists that believed in me and pushed me to move forward with my goals of helping women.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Pathway to Wellness, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Psychotherapist and I own The Pathway to Wellness, LLC. I specialize in supporting Womxn through various transitions, including but not limited to Womanhood, Motherhood, career moves and family issues. I support womxn getting to their best lives by helping them find their way through life changes and past traumas, including sexual traumas and PTSD. I strive for womxn to get to their own pathway to happiness, health and emotional wealth.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next decade, I think the Counseling industry will have a major shift. Due to the changes, mentally, physically, emotionally and economically, I think that Counseling services will either become more available or people will recognize the benefit of using this safe place as a support to them moving forward. I think there will no longer be the idea of praying through things, while this is good and oftentimes works, I think that some people feel that their higher power has led them to someone bigger than themselves for assistance in dealing, especially in difficult times. The Counseling Industry will continue to strive to be that place.

I am hopeful that more people will be open to the ideas of therapy and seek it out instead of continuing to keep the things they are dealing with to themselves. It’s time that we stop with the Superhero syndrome and learn that we have to fill our cups in order to be all that we need to be to ourselves and to others. Turning to Counseling, we are often able to see things more clear than we initially had been because we enlist the support of a nonbiased helping professional.

I also see the Counseling Industry moving across state lines. With the addition of Telehealth, clients will be able to expand their search for therapists that specialize in their areas of interest outside of their communities. Mediums such as Facebook and Instagram have opened up advertising and research so that clients may find their ideal Therapists and Therapists can identify their ideal clients, thus creating further specialization and less burnout by the therapists. By identifying and working within our niches, the counseling industry will be better equipped to handle their clientele while decreasing less burnout by focusing on our own strong suits.
