Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie O’Connor.
Julie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had an interest in skin care for many years before becoming an Aesthetician. In fact, I didn’t even know there was any such thing until right before I enrolled in school at The International School of Skin and Nails. I graduated in 2002 and worked at a salon for a short while until the business was sold. Then I was approached by a friend from school asking me to come and work at her salon/spa. She also trained me to be her manager. I enjoyed that as well, but it wasn’t long before she also sold her business and so I moved on again. Later I worked for a couple of Plastic Surgeons doing mostly anti-aging skin care treatments and laser procedures. This was by far the most satisfying position for me. I loved being able to offer results oriented medical skin care treatments. However, I realized that I long as I worked for someone else, I really didn’t have the control I needed to be able to offer all the services that I wanted to. That was the deciding factor in my leaving Plastic Surgical skin care and opening Metamorphosis Clinical Skin Care.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business is very scary. You wonder “Will anybody come?” and “Where will I find clients?” I have been very blessed at Metamorphosis with great clients. Most of my customers have come because they were referred by a friend that was already a client.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Metamorphosis Clinical Skin Care story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in anti-aging skin care treatments at Metamorphosis. I offer clinical treatments, which to me means, not so much of a spa treatment but more a skin care treatment designed to give a noticeable improvement in the skin. Most of my treatments involve machines. My number one service is by far the Non-Surgical Facelift. This treatment is very popular and accounts for about 90% of my business. I started offering this service during my first year in business and it’s been far more popular than anything else I’ve ever done, including laser treatments. I think women like this service because it makes many look 5 to 10 years younger without ever doing anything invasive.
It’s also very affordable. I also do Chemical peels, Microdermabrasion, Hydradermabrasion, Osmosis Infusions, Led Photorejuvenation and Oxygen facials as well as many other customizable treatments. I have an Aesthetician friend, Dee Dee Dermody of Purre Face and Body in Alpharetta that helps me with overflow. She is a like minded Aesthetician who also enjoys offering results oriented treatments. I think we are different from other spa and salons for that very reason. At Metamorphosis, we are in the business of transformation rather than offering fluff facials.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I am noticing more independent Aestheticians like myself that really love skin care but are tired of working for others and sometimes having their creativity stifled. There are many more going into business for themselves and choosing to focus on their particular area of interest and skill. For me, that’s Non-Surgical Facelifting. If I worked as an employee in a spa, I might also be asked to do bikini waxes, but I wouldn’t be very good at it. Now you have Aestheticians going into business for themselves that only do waxing. They’re very good at it when that’s all they do and it’s something they enjoy.
