Meet Dr. Jameelah Nelson of Women’s Journey Naturopathic Center in Dunwoody

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jameelah Nelson.

Dr. Nelson, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always wanted to become a doctor since I was five years old. I wanted to be a conventional doctor until I was pregnant with my son. While pregnant, I begin to research how a healthy diet, lifestyle and natural medicine really matter in order to have a healthy baby. I knew that the changes I made in my life I wanted to incorporate with my patients.

I discovered naturopathic medicine while looking at a magazine at my OB/GYN appointment and saw an article about a naturopathic doctor. When I got home, I looked up and called a local naturopathic doctor in my area. She shared her story and all about naturopathic medicine. I felt like the principle of naturopathic medicine resonated with me and the type of doctor I wanted to become. She told me about the naturopathic medical school in Arizona. I quit my job and moved my family to Arizona so I could attend medical school and pursue my dream.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not! When I decided to completely change careers and quit my job to pursue my dream of becoming a naturopathic doctor. My family and I moved 1800 miles from Atlanta to Arizona. I started medical school with a two-year-old. Medical school has its challenges but balancing the high demand for school with being a mom and wife was very difficult.

Please tell us about Women’s Journey Naturopathic Center.
I am a naturopathic doctor with a huge passion for helping new moms and children! Stepping into the new role as a mother can be challenging. The feeling of being tired all the time, brain fog, and pain. Trust me. I get it because I have been there. As a mother of two, I understand the challenging new mom’s face. I struggled with postpartum depression after my first child. At that time, I had no idea what postpartum depression was. I struggled for years. My experience inspired me to help other mothers through their motherhood journey.

With information at our fingertips, many moms are exhausted and overwhelmed with information on what to do. My goal is to support you throughout your motherhood journey. I want to create an environment where mothers feel heard, understood, and safe to share their stories and concerns. I want to empower mothers to step into their new role as mothers with confidence, energy, and joy. Whether you are trying to conceive, currently pregnant, or postpartum, I can support you throughout your motherhood journey.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The vision of Women’s Journey Naturopathic Center is to empower, educate and inspire patients to break unhealthy habits passed down through generations and support their body’s natural ability to heal. I am looking forward to bring awareness about the healing power of naturopathic medicine.
