Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Sanders.
Justin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Before I started my business, J. Michael Creatives, my father gave me the name way before I started it. He gave it to me while I was in high school in my junior year. Before I started my freshman year in college, I was working on a clothing line but found myself doing designs and clothing for other people and other clothing lines. Therefore, I cut the clothing line that I was working on and ran with J. Michael Creatives. Since then, I have worked with many different clothing lines, completed orders for many people, and dropped some of my own merchandise from my business. And each year, I get better and reap more from the time and effort that I’ve given. My success and my goals mainly come from God and my friends and family that support me with ideas and motivation to help me exceed and go beyond and be different from others. My creativity and my ideas come from God. Without Him, I know this wouldn’t be what it is today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have had plenty of challenges, but my main challenge was sticking to it. A lot of times, I would stray away from creating, brainstorming, and dreaming because I would have my focus on school or church or other things. Sometimes I would just give up because I wasn’t getting any orders. Over the past year, I challenged myself to stick with it and keep going and to always create, even if I’m not getting any customers or any attention. I told myself, “Keep creating, keep going, keep being productive.”
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the J. Michael Creatives story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m Justin Michael Sanders and my business is J. Michael Creatives. I do screen printing and heat pressing, graphic designs, and I work with clothing lines to help them out with ideas, designs, and to get them started. People know me to create clothing for them for personal reasons, or if they want to start a clothing line, or just make some clothes for themselves and some friends or families. I’m proud that in my city, Albany, I’m able to create for so many people and bring ideas and to work by my slogan, “bringing dreams to reality!” I’m different from others because I want to help others more than make a name for myself. A lot of young entrepreneurs want to make money and get famous and put themselves out there in the world. I just want to create for others and bring happiness, joy, and excitement to people when they see their ideas on clothing or accessories.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck but blessed is more like it. And when I say I’m blessed, I’m not trying to be super-spiritual, but that’s just what I believe in and what I live by. I know that God has His hands on my business, and I’m not working with my own skills and abilities. I’m trusting God that as I utilize what He has gifted me, He’ll bring all the fame and blessings to me, not me chasing after it. That’s why I believe I can never lose or go down in my business.
