Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Bryce.
Toni, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to be on television. Around the age of 12, I started watching beauty videos on YouTube. However, I always noticed that there were never any girls that looked like me on YouTube. I couldn’t relate to any of the hair tutorials because my hair was kinkier than theirs. I couldn’t relate to any of the makeup videos because certain makeup looks that looked good on them wouldn’t look good on me. With wanting to be on television, I thought YouTube would be a perfect platform for me to create content and help other girls who looked like me to be able to try different styles. The rest is history!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
YouTube definitely has not been a smooth road. I’ve taken numerous breaks during the course of starting my channel. As I stated, I started YouTube around the age of 12, but I quit due to other students in my class, finding my channel and making fun of me for making YouTube videos. When I was around 16, I decided to start it again, and once again, people at my school saw my channel and would talk about it. It wasn’t that they were necessarily talking bad about it, but I just didn’t want people I knew personally to even know I had a channel. So once again, I quit for some time. When I was 17, I posted my prom vlog that got really popular and has over 178,000 views and counting as of today. When I saw that, I knew that I had to stay consistent and keep on posting. In my freshman year of college, I began posting college content that did very well and gained over 2,000 subscribers within just six months. I learned that in order to be successful on YouTube, you need to stay consistent, not care what others think, and be creative. It took me five years to figure that out, but I’m sure glad I did.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an influencer that produces content on YouTube and on my podcast. I specialize in creating, producing, and editing content. My YouTube channel is a girl talk/black feminist channel, while my podcast is a true-crime series. I’m most proud of the fact that I can help young women by creating advice videos and girl boss content and inform people about true crime stories they may have never heard of or wanted to know more about. I absolutely love what I do and I hope to continue expanding my platform!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood is playing with barbie dolls with my sister and cousins. Just those moments of bliss and innocence I truly miss.
