Meet Nicholas Grier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Grier.

Nicholas, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was always the person to always get overlooked and never get attention towards people. So I always had that mindset of earning my respect and giving people something to look at, I figured out fashion was my way of expressing myself physically and mentally, I can describe my style, art, clothes, modeling just through how I go about myself with how I dress and look. On that road I faced a lot of obstacles with negativity but also with positivity and that made me to the person I am today.

I look at fashion as a form of expression, but it’s also one of the hardest fields to get to the top with, because like it or not there are about a million people who want to do the same exact thing as you and they’re probably ten steps ahead of you, but you gotta have the mindset of keep moving forward and finding your own ways to stand out from others, I look at my growth as this… fashion is art… art is fashion. I use different techniques that you normally wouldn’t do on clothing as a way of expressing my creativity, which represents me as a whole. So till this day, I’m not a headstrong person because I know there are areas I need improving in but there are also areas I’ve mastered so all I can continue to say to the next person is keep moving forward and keep trying to expand your creativity.

Has it been a smooth road?
I wish I could say it’s been a smooth road but it has not. In my time of growing I’ve faced a lot of failures but those failures I’ve faced has grown me and making me become a stronger individual and hate it or not, you experiencing these failures also make you know what not to do next time so now you’ve gained knowledge, just as I did so far which led me to a lot of success as well. Growing up, I was never the person everyone respected or cared enough for advice. It wasn’t until my senior year of highschool when I took my art and expanded my mindset that people finally slowly started to show me respect, I hate that it is that way, but it also makes you think you really have to earn your respect from people. I found a way to earn my respect from strangers simply by them looking at my outfit or my modeling pictures by me showing my process through my art.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m labeled as a fashion creative. I find different ways to stand out and express my creativity through people, modeling, clothes and life. I’ve been modeling since late 2017. I’ve been designing clothes since late 2018. I always have that mindset of me being the best dressed because I know what I’m capable of and for the fact, I know my closet. I get inspired simply by the world I live in, by scenery, and literally just going to the mall observing the stores, the workers, the people walking, you have to find what inspires you to help you grow.

With my business, I always try to grow with everything I do. I never wanna have the same photoshoot idea as the next. I’m really big on expanding my authenticity through my art. I started off customizing clothes with hand sewing, which then leaded to me getting into sewing machines, which then lead me to learn how to crochet, and now I’m learning more into hand embroidery. I want my business to define the definition of art and for me to not be the same as the next, I want people to get it through there head that fashion is art… the same as art is fashion. You can express yourself creativity just simply by what you wear based off color schemes, clothes I’ve made, etc.

I’m most proud of the growth that I’m not scared to show my beginning process till my end I’m ok with embarrassing myself I learn from my mistakes and I’m far from perfect but letting people see my beginning to end also make people realize things as far as my motivation and that I’m expressing my creativity with new techniques through fashion, which is really needed. So I believe what sets me apart from everybody is my mindset of keep moving forward to always have something that represents me on my clothing or modeling portfolio as far as art symbols, different techniques you don’t usually see on clothes and just to help people really get this through there head… that fashion is art.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like Atlanta is a good place for business because we’re at a time period we’re literally everyone is for the culture and people want to support other black businesses as much as possible, me being an African American I’m all for it, and Atlanta itself has plenty of areas in the city where you can simply have a pop-up shop outside of Atlantic station and you will have good support. I personally want to expand pass Atlanta and go to places as far as New York, Tokyo, Paris and London for my fashion but as a start position yes Atlanta is a great start because you will have a great way of networking with people literally anywhere and have the support you need. My only comment for improvement is to start an Atlanta fashion week… such as New York fashion week, Paris fashion week, Milan fashion week. We should help Atlanta be more recognized for the fashion field in modeling and designing.
