Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Londa Reid.
D’Londa, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I started in 2019, making candied grapes they became really popular and I used to buy them literally everyday from a girl on Instagram. I was working at QT, going to school at Atlanta Tech for dental assistant, and being a mommy of two while only being at the time 21 years old I was juggling a lot. One day I just woke up and quit my job. Sometimes I be thinking something come over me, and I just say and was like I got to do something to make sure me and my kids straight. I’m breaking my back at this job for $10 an hour, working part-time coming home with $200 checks every week I knew it was something better. I seen the grapes were really popping in Atlanta so I just tried it out. I used to call mine Girly Grapes before I turned into Girly’s sweet treats because I only made grapes until I am starting doing other sweets. I used to have cool little flavors, like Slime Rockz, Blue Rockz, Ruby Rockz and people were really supporting me. The more support I got, the harder I went. I swear it uplifts me to see people really supporting me. I quit school, I quit my job and I was just working for me full time, spending more time with my kids making my weeks worth paycheck in 48 hours just off grapes!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, it’s been a smooth road. The only struggle I will say that plays a part in my life and my business is managing being a mom and a boss at the same time! It sounds good being able to wake up and do what you want, work for yourself and not have to clock in on anyone’s clock but I’m a full-time mom as well. I’m waking up, cooking breakfast-making grapes, cleaning up toys, dipping strawberries, getting myself together getting my kids together, bagging up my products loading up my products in the car, loading up the kids, delivering with the kids stopping for food or drinks when they’re hungry I’m literally doing everything at once and by myself so it sometimes is a lot on me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Girly’s Sweet Treats – what should we know?
I started off specializing in candied grapes but now I have a full sweets menu of things you can choose from. I like to say I fill people’s sweet tooth! If you are not getting sweets from Girly, then who? Lol. I would say I’m known for my grapes and my Berry Blue Velvet crunch cake. My granny was someone very special to me. She used to bake cakes when I was growing up and she had all homemade recipes. When she passed, mom has my granny’s special red velvet cake recipe and one day, I sat and thought about it and said mama, we need to use her recipe and turn it up! That’s when we came with the berry blue crunch cake! That’s what I would say I’m known for now because many people make grapes and my grapes are specially made I have my own flavors and candy mixtures but I’m most proud of the support I get from people, the love that’s shown to me and for me being consistent and not giving up.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mom! My mom is such a big help for my business. There would be no Berry Blue Velvet Crunch cake without her. My mom and my supporters are my biggest supporters and who keep me going. It really uplifts me to see people who I don’t even know acknowledge me, support me, and want better for me! It be people you don’t even know over your own friend and family who wanna see you win more.
