Because of her fearlessness she has interviewed and rubbed shoulders with the likes of National Recording Artists, Syleena Johnson, Kandi Burrus, Angie Stone, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and John Legend to name a few and have built solid business and personal relationships with elite executives around the world.

Her story evolves out of her determination to be successful no matter the odds.

After deciding not embark upon a career in education after my matriculation at Clark Atlanta University, I began to rely on my instincts and what I was taught. I knew that I had a love for business, but I wasn’t sure what type of business I wanted to work in or own. In high school I utilized the work release program and worked a Secretary, as we were called at the time, at his insurance agency. I enjoyed the buzz of the office, shuffling of paper work and getting things done. As I reflected over my childhood and those experiences, I signed up with a temporary staffing agency. As a contract worker I had the opportunity to work with fortune 500 companies, small business, woman owned business, private corporations and universities.

While working in various positions, I met my first business partner who shared the same passions which were weddings and administrative work. We realized that our office positions were responsible for not only managing the office and managers, but it was also to take care of planning and scheduling the holiday parties, town hall, staff meetings and employee trainings. We then researched if there was such a career or service that combined office work and event planning. We found that there was such a thing and they were called VAs, Virtual Assistants. We were excited about this venture and formed BostonReid, Inc. We sought out business consultants who introduced us to FastTrack program and we were off! We planned weddings and started helping small business owners with their administrative needs. As life would have it, things happen, life changes and we dissolved the company, on excellent terms, she is STILL one of my best friends today!

An opportunity presented itself for a move to Columbia, SC and I resigned from my job, obtained my first client started my own business, BostonFirst Administrative Management Services, Inc. Well, as life would have it again, that client didn’t work out and I had to go back to traditional work and found out I was going to be a mom. I knew I could always consult with a temp agency to assist me with my search and sure enough it worked! I began working as an Executive Administrative Assistant for an engineering firm then to Benedict College, which changed my life. I knew coming to Columbia, I had a different mindset. Atlanta teaches you so much about how to grind, how to hustle and to take care of business. I knew what I had to do. I got another opportunity to work for another engineering firm, which turned out to be my last job as an EMPLOYEE. Don’t get it twisted, that transition was NOT planned, lol. I came to work one day with 40 hours and was told my position would go down to 10 hrs. per week. Out of nowhere. I have some ideas of why, but it’s all irrelevant now. But what was relevant was that I lost everything! 2 story house, new car, etc. etc. LOST IT and my son and I had to move back home to Swainsboro, GA.

I never would have thought that living back in my hometown would be the thing that would change my life! I always felt that if I had to go home, I failed. I could not have been more wrong. I was now forced into entrepreneurship because I knew I wouldn’t be able to find a job that would be comparable to what I was making in Columbia and there were no local temp agencies. So, I was determined to win! My boyfriend at the time made an investment in me to meet with a business coach. I promised him that I would double his investment. He believed in me, had the meeting. tripled his investment and I’ve been soaring ever since.

I have been a full-time entrepreneur for 4 years. Since my return I have been getting into “good trouble.” Engulfed n community work with various organizations and agencies. I was named the newest Board member for the Department of Children and Family Services (2019). Most recently I’ve birthed, BostonFirst Staffing Agency, Inc. It is the first and only black and female owned staffing agency in Swainsboro, GA. I am truly living the life of my dreams.

Shayna attributes her success to God’s guidance, grace, mercy and favor, the solid educational foundation she received at Clark Atlanta University, where the motto is “Find A Way or Make One”, which rings in her heart daily and the determination to build a solid foundation and legacy for the love of her life, her son, Chase Michael Banks.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has NOT been a smooth road. This journey has been laced with huge ups and huge downs.

One of the first struggles was juggling a traditional job and running a business. I quickly understood that I wasn’t a good employee, lol. All I wanted to do was work on my business. When I could I would no matter where I was. I got strategic! I utilized my lunch breaks to take meetings with potential clients and use my vacation time to take on projects that required me to be away from work. I knew where I was going and I did whatever it took to make it happen.

One of the first struggles was getting those closest to you to believe in your vision. All they knew was that I was behind my computer for hours. They couldn’t see the financial gain. Then I learned I didn’t need them to believe, I was going to show them through my actions.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Our city is close knit! I see people I went to elementary – high school with daily. What a blessing. We have the ability to come together and ignite real change, but what I like least is the division. Racial issues are still huge and probably more prominent in rural cities like Swainsboro. We don’t have access to activities for our kids or young adults. I could go on and on about the dislikes, but I decided to do better and that’s becoming a part of the solutions and do my part to ignite the change I and others hope to see.
