Today we’d like to introduce you to Midi Jay.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Midi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Coming from the Tidewater, “757” Area of Virginia, I made my way to Atlanta through an internship at Means Street Studios I landed my last year in college. Once I graduated, I made the move to Atlanta to make everything I’ve been preparing for happen.
I started playing instruments and making beats at 11. My big brother had FL Studio on his desktop PC, which intrigued me. He would play me the tracks he made on an mp3 player, and eventually I began sneaking on his computer to try it out. Over time I continued to growing my musical skill, playing trombone in school and bass guitar in church. When I was 14, I saved up enough money from playing in church to buy an iPad and began making beats and selling them to guys around school. By 16, when I was gifted my own laptop, I was set on taking making beats seriously and started dropping remixes on SoundCloud. By the time high school graduation came around, I had a music and academic scholarship for college where I mastered my craft from music theory to engineering.
After college, working at one of the top studios in Atlanta, I’ve experienced a lot of things I never expected. Behind all the hype, I’ve learned a lot about how I should and shouldn’t move as a producer, and have made many bonds that wouldn’t have come if I wasn’t here and in the position, I’m in.
Has it been a smooth road?
Trying to maintain in Atlanta as an intern was a challenge from Day 1. I’ve taken countless losses and experienced my lowest lows since I’ve been here. I’ve worked the most random of jobs trying to make ends meet and invest in myself in the process. That’s what you have to do, especially when you hate the job, use it to your advantage until you can do what you want. Don’t let it trap you in.
We’d love to hear more about your music.
As a musician first and producer second, I have a true love for playing and making the best music possible. I have an obsession with the intricacies in music and understanding why certain music hits you a certain way. The details are important to me, and I express that in my beats. My music is genre bending and takes inspiration from many sources, which makes something unique and undeniable when it all comes together. I have several songs dropping soon with rappers across the city such as Jefe Global, and my own beat tape “Oceans” I released in 2018 is available for streaming. Anyone can purchase my beats at www.midijay.com.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My favorite thing about the city is the blackness, the city is full of black culture, success, and opportunity. My least favorite thing is the potholes and traffic.
