Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Aguilera.
Allison, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I really wanted to make some kind of a difference and contribute to the black lives matter movement in early June of this year. I wanted to do my part to help spread awareness on the small platform that I have on Instagram as well as raise money to be donated towards the cause. I’ve always wanted to make stickers in the past, and I realized that donating the money from these stickers would be a great way to contribute. The design featured a black woman surrounded by plants and the quote, “I am changing the things I cannot accept” by Angela Davis. I genuinely want to do everything that I can and make a positive difference in all of this, so to encourage more people to donate and to do their own research, I gave everyone the option to choose which organization/ fund their donations would go.
The first batch of 100 stickers sold out on the first day, so I took some time to design three other stickers, all focusing on supporting the black lives matter movement. I am currently in the process of creating a small shop to make them more accessible, but people can always contact me if they’re interested in donating a few dollars for a sticker and a cause to help those in need of support.
Has it been a smooth road?
I created the stickers at the beginning of June, and it was so inspiring to see so many people contributing to over 30 different funds and organizations that supported black lives! However, by the time I had created more stickers later in the month, it just seemed like people weren’t as interested. Despite this, I will continue to offer these stickers as a way to encourage people to keep up the conversation and spread awareness.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’ve only just recently begun creating stickers, but I have been making small commissioned art since 2017. I mostly draw portraits for people, but I also like illustrating and making comics as well. I’m not even an official business because I’ve started exploring the business side of art very recently, but I hope that this will spark a future online shop where I might sell prints of my artwork alongside these stickers that will always be sold for donations.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I would definitely recommend starting in the Atlanta area/Decatur! It’s incredibly diverse and especially immersed in the arts. There is an impressive artistic community throughout Atlanta, and I believe it’s a very supportive place to begin any business.
