Today we’d like to introduce you to Myesha Johnson.
Myesha, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I fell in love with fitness in 2018 – at the time I was overweight and unhealthy, uncomfortable in my own skin and had started to notice minor health issues arising, even though I was only 27. I had tried countless diets and nothing seemed to give me results for longer than a month – I was tired of losing and gaining the same eight lbs. and I knew that I wanted to be healthier and more confident, so I made my New Year’s resolution to lose 30 lbs. by the end of the 2018..
I studied countless hours of YouTube videos for advice on what and when to eat, what kinds of workouts to do and fastest ways to lose weight, but in the end the action is what produced results – I started showing up to the gym consistently, mapped out a healthy meal plan to follow every week and started setting weekly and monthly goals for myself. I tracked my weight, measurements and body fat percentage every week, took process pictures and invited friends to the gym with men for extra accountability.
Soon, I was down 50 lbs. in eight months – all of my biometrics had improved, my clothes were all too big, going to the gym no longer felt like a chore and best of all – I understood what it felt like to push your body to achieve your goals, outline milestones and crush them consistently – demonstrating self-love through physical exercise became my reward for a hard day at work, not a chore to just lose a few pounds before an event.
Over time, family and friends started reaching out to me for advice, coming to my house for healthy meals and talking to me about fitness and I realized that helping other people improve their health was something I am truly passionate about. I’ve experienced the improvements in my mental, physical and even spiritual wellbeing since I have become involved with fitness, and I wanted to put my knowledge and experience together and offer it to other people to help along their fitness journey.
From there Muscle by My was born and I started my entrepreneurship journey – helping others incorporate a healthy lifestyle in a way that works for them and showing how to live a healthier life.
Has it been a smooth road?
In a fitness journey there are always plateaus and setbacks – family holidays, days when you just don’t feel like going to the gym, times when you are not getting enough water or sleep – it’s important that you have accountability both internally and externally to get through those times.
When I launched Muscle By My setbacks biggest challenge was my own mindset – the COVID-19 pandemic made at home workouts very popular on social media and I was afraid that I was stepping into an oversaturated market. I was scrolling Instagram late night and saw a quote that said “When you feel discouraged about your business idea because there’s so many people around you doing the same thing, go to the grocery store and look down the bread aisle. Some idea, 15+ companies selling the same thing!”
In both my fitness and business journeys, the thing that that has helped me overcome struggles is waking up each day with a mission to be 1% better. My mission has always been to help other people better their lives, and when I combined that with my passion for fitness, Muscle By My was born! Each day I set a goal to step outside of my comfort zone – switching up my workout, challenging myself with new business strategies, trying new foods, etc. As you continue to push outside your comfort zone it becomes easier each time and you can achieve goals you never thought were possible!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Muscle By My specializes in online fitness programs focused on weight loss/gain, including live group workouts, downloadable meal and workout guides, custom training programs, and fitness merchandise that has been key in my own personal transformation – yoga mats, resistance bands, water bottles, etc.
My content and materials are priced to be affordable and flexible, meaning the workouts are home and gym compatible and the meal plans focus on healthy but reasonable options so that nutrition becomes a lifestyle instead of a “diet” – making it easier to achieve your fitness goals without feeling like you are hungry all the time or overworking your body.
Sustainability is the most important factor in maintaining progress, and my programs seek to bring simple changes to your life that propel your fitness journey.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the fitness industry continuing to grow rapidly over the next 5-10 years. As people become more aware of what we consume and technology allows everyone access to research and data regarding health/fitness, I can imagine vegan/vegetarian options becoming even more widely available, farmers markets for fresh fruits and vegetables becoming more popular, and the fitness industry continuing to grow as people find innovative ways to get physical exercise.
