Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Perry.
Breanna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Memoirs of Happy Black Girl is a young adult memoir that I am currently writing about my life. The wisdom and insight God has given me through my mistakes and pain helped to develop a relationship with him that is honest, transparent and void of condemnation and shame. This humbling experience inspired me to write about it and share with others.
In February of 2019, I started the MHBG blog to foster community and engagement with the content I am writing about in the book. I wanted to engage my audience with relatable stories and life lessons from my past. Stories of how I have navigated past relationship heartbreaks, abandonment issues and insecurities. What began as a form of catharsis for myself, became one for my small community of readers and has since grown in such a short time frame.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Initially, it was very challenging to be so transparent, as I am a very private and sometimes shy individual. I had to keep in mind that God didn’t just bless me to keep it all to myself. Fortunately, my readers were so receptive, embracing and non-judgemental, it became much easier to be myself in my work.
The next challenge was fine-tuning my craft as a writer. I spent a good deal of time and money attending writing conferences and workshops and seeking coaches for feedback and improvements to my work.
The final challenge, which is ongoing, is continuing to believe in myself, my work, and my journey. Keeping in mind that my stories can help others cope and be more accepting of their own. If I encourage just one person my post has done its job.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am currently pursuing my MSW Degree to become a clinical social worker and I plan to start my own practice. My goal is to help black women cope with their traumas and past hurts through psychotherapy. In the meantime, Memoirs of a Happy Black Girl, the blog and soon the book will be a tool to empower and uplift women in need of self-healing.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I first and foremost have to give credit to God, who planted the seed in my heart to pursue this path and the courage to carry it out.
Secondly, I thank my husband and sister-in-law, who first believed in me, willingly shoots all of my blog photos, edits most of my work and is always seeking resources to further assist my goals.
Last but not least, all of my readers, family and friends, who are always providing ongoing support, taking their time to read and critique my posts, provide book advice, and edit book excerpts, sharing their stories and are always uplifting, sharing and supporting my work!
